My love for Maltese Falcon and Casablanca know no bounds, but I can't otherwise narrow it down to a list. Even just listing the 1940s movies I own on DVD will take too long. :)

Has anyone mentioned Detour yet?

Just a few to wet the whistle, in no particular order.

1. "His Girl Friday" (1940) -- Cary Grant, Roslind Russell.

2. "The Lady Eve" (1941) -- Henry Fonda, Barbara Stanwyck.

3. "The Maltese Falcon" (1941) -- Bogart, et al.

4. "Mask of Dimitrios" (1944) Peter Lorre, Sidney Greenstreet.

5. "The Third Man" (1949) Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten.

6. "Cornered" (1945) Dick Powell.

7. "Red River" (1948) John Wayne, Mongomery Clift.

8. "The Search" (1948) Montgomery Clift, Aline MacMahon.

9. "To the Ends of the Earth" (1948) Dick Powell, Signe Hasso.

10. "Northwest Passage" (1940) Spencer Tracy, Robert Young.

11. "Boom Town" (1940) Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert.

12. "The Philadelphia Story" (1940) Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant, James Stewart.

13. "Talk of the Town" (1942) Cary Grant, Ronald Coleman, Jean Arthur.

14. "Mr. Blandings Builds his Dream House" (1948) Cary Grant, Myna Loy, Melvin Douglas.

That's enough to get you started.

Just to keep this thread going I'll mention one of my all time favorites that I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned before: "How Green Was My Valley".
Plus all of the above.

I've forgotten The Grapes of Wrath. I have seen it last week for the first time, but it is still something I am thinking about. Great thing with good old Fonda. But I am not sure, was it made in the 40s or in the 30s?

Though it was filmed from Oct-Nov 1939. Just managing to get some of that 1939 magic! No wonder 1940 is probably the second-greatest year in Hollywood movie history!

I recently saw 'For Me and My Gal' which was just excellent.
And another of my favourites is 'Bringing up Baby' which i'm surprised nobody's mentioned this one, as it's soo funny lol, it features Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant (a great combination) and much more entertaining, I think, than the philedelphia story, though that is a pretty good movie as well.

It's a great movie (one of my favorites), but it was made in the 30s. :)

Everyone has mentioned "Laura", but let's not forget Preminger's other great Dana Andrews movie "Fallen Angel" which came out in 1945.

Oh! :eusa_doh: Woops! How embarassing. I imagine that is why it wasn't mentioned then :p just assumed that it was early 40s, I guess I ought to check next time particularly as I haven't watched it in while.
Thanks for the correction:)
