This is one of our new Fire Stations, they are trying to capture the essence of the old buildings. Certainly a step up from the 60s universal boxes!

Sad how so many new firehouses are single story to do away with sliding down the poles (reduce injury liability etc).

Does the parking garage have a Man Lift? I remember one of ours still had one into the 70s. When I was a kid, I thought that would be right up their with Fireman as a job! Riding the lift, or hanging of the back of a Firetruck, life couldn't get any better for a 6 year old!

Checked yesterday and they thought I was crazy simply describing a Man Lift - absolutely no Man Lift in this garage.

Some of you might recognise it from a famous blockbuster from around 10 years ago in which it was used.

Was always one of my favorites. Dunno why, but even as a kid, I enjoyed going past thus building.

This was recently renovated into an veterinarian office, after being closed for several years.

Probably one of the oldest buildings in my town, I always loved going here as a kid. Currently, the tiling is being replaced inside as it was cracking.

Here's another one in my town. The very first Church. Sadly, the grand steeple that once capped it fell into disrepair and had to be removed....

The Field Museum has been one of my favorite buildings since I was a child. I love the architecture of it, for one, and for another, it's got Dinosaurs. ;) Just went today, in fact, for a class. Took this pic:

Although I have never had the opportunity to enter it, my favorite building is the Flatiron building in NYC. I dearly love that building. A close second would be Monticello. Jefferson was about as tall as I am, so the scale of Monticello just feels right.

Here are some buildings of historic importance at least to my hometown. Not nationally though.

Our local theater. Its an antique store now which is sad. But I saw a lot of movies there growing up as did my parents.

The old bank building. Vacant now. I always thought the ground floor would make a good place for a 50s diner. Lots of parking and business nearby.

I always liked this one. Made with indigenous Red Rock sand stone blocks. Very striking as you can see!

My favorite building in Houston: the Julia Ideson Building, formerly the Central Branch of the Houston Public Library. Built in 1925, it served as the downtown library branch until the early 70s, when a much larger facility was built next door (though in typical late-century modern style). It was renamed in honor of the woman who served as Houston public librarian from 1903-1945, and now houses archives and historical research material. The main atrium is a popular place for wedding photographs, lectures and receptions, though it's still open to the public and the reading room is still one of my favorite places to sit and enjoy some quiet time:
