I've been looking at the photos of Mitchum near the beginning of this thread.

I now believe that the hat I have that most closely matches his hat, shape-wise, is the light brown Royal Stetson. And it so happens the burgundy ribbon looks really good on it. And it's got the right edge on it, as well.

I also like the warm medium brown ribbon that's on it now, so I don't know yet what I'm gonna do.

I was thinking Mitchum's hat leaned more toward the current Winchester granite felt with it's grey base and brown undertones.

Being a huge fan of natural felt, I like that combo as well.

The hat posted above at post #32 is granite.

So I have a length of perfectly colored burgundy ribbon in hand, thanks to Brent @deadlyhandsome.

What I have done is pull out as many of my gray hats as I could find, and a couple of not-quite-grays, as well, that I think this ribbon will look good on. Not all these hats are contenders, due to vintageness and, even more so, rarity.

The photos posted in this thread were taken in my kitchen, under a combination of sunlight, and incandescent and fluorescent lighting. The colors are not exact but it's the best I can do right now. To get more accurate shots, maybe next weekend I'll do this again outside, weather permitting.

The first two hats are the most likely candidates: the carbon gray Fed IV and the medium/light gray Royal Stetson that I call 'Roach.' I think the ribbon looks best on these two, with the added bonus that the Fed IV is not vintage, and the Roach was a mess and incomplete when I got it, and although refurbished, has not been restored to original.

Some other hats that the ribbon looks good on, but are not as likely to be molested - Adventurebilt Seaplane Gray and Dobbs Hanover Square:

Two hats that are not gray - A Royal Stetson that's a nice light brown, and a VS that I don't know the color of. It's sort of a cross between sand, clay, and I don't know what, but it's probably the closest hat I have to the warm gray hat that Mitchum wore in the movie.

I wrapped the ribbon around a couple of other gray hats, but they're not at all relevant to this project due mainly to rarity, and dimensions of the hats, that were made for fat ribbons, iow, more than the more common 1.5" that most of these hats have, and that the burgundy ribbon matches.

So, opinions? I am not sure which hat would look best with this conversion, or any at all.

Just looking at the pics posted here, I like the 3rd and last hats best with the burgundy ribbon.

If they were my hats and my ribbon, I'd definitely go with the "medium/light gray Royal Stetson" that you call "Roach". To my eye that's the hat on which the ribbon color and width works best. It's probably not the best match to Mitchum's hat, but I'm really not taking that into consideration; I just think it's the hat that ribbon works best on.

Thank you The only issue I have with it is a slight ghosting of the previous wider ribbon, but I'm hoping that will fade with time. It's a gray Dobbs Twenty with a Guilded edge and 3 inch brim.

I have a gray Dobbs Hanover Square with a 2 5/8 or 2 3/4" (I never remember which) brim that would look wonderful with the maroon ribbon, but I can't bring myself to modify a vintage hat that is in perfect condition - I mean not even having a pro do it. I love originality, especially when things are vintage.

I can understand that. I felt okay doing mine because the original ribbon had some badly bleached out spots and needed replaced.

That's an Adventurebilt and a VS. Yes, I, too, like both them with the maroon ribbon. Hmm . . .

At this point, the Adventurebilt might as well be vintage because they're not being made anymore. The VS is soon to be a not-made-anymore brand, as well.

That takes me back to the Akubra and ba***rd Royal Stetson.

I think I just had an epiphany.

I just happened to notice another beater that it turns out would be perfect for this, as well.

This is an old Dobbs that I've had forever. It has the kind of felt that takes a crease like a true Golden Era hat.

It was a mess when I got it. Sweat rotted and falling out, no liner, and the PO cut the brim with a scissors. He was probably trying to emulate what Richard Swales did to the original Herbert Johnson Poet for Harrison Ford.

I kept the hat because the brim was not too small, and it turned out that the brim was perfectly sized and sloped for that casual wear-it-back-on-the-head style.

I replaced the ribbon, and put in a new sweat and liner. The ribbon that's on it now is a medium brown and really does very little to set off the hat.

Although a vintage-era hat, I have no qualms about changing the ribbon because it has already had so much done to it.

Here it is with the maroon ribbon draped over it. This picture is the closest I could get to the actual colors.

Although it is not gray, I like the maroon ribbon on this hat more than on any of the others, and I liked it on my tan Royal Stetson, so this is where it will go.

Mitchum's hat was not a true gray, so this tan hat will fit the bill well.

So here's the hat with the new burgundy ribbon in place.

It is not complete. I still need to shrink the ribbon so the top of it it sits snugly against the felt. But I think it came out well, overall. The felt color goes very well with the ribbon color, and quite frankly, none of my other hat candidates needed a ribbon transplant as much as this one.
