He's one of those actors who essentially plays himself in every role, and when he tries to create an actual character that's different from himself it becomes obvious he can't act.

Oh, and at this point the new movie will be called Top Gun: Maverick and seems to be more sequel than remake. It will once again star Cruise, but this time he'll allegedly be playing an instructor like Tom Skerrit's "Viper" in the original.

Started to say this very thing, but didn't. Figured he'd show up in the reboot.

I will have to be tied down and have my eyelids forced open for me to watch that one.

That was basically me with the first one. And it will be me with this one.

Hahaha! I hear you there. 80s ridiculousness all the way.

Good looking has no cares "hero". Check.

Hero hooks up with girl. Check.

Hero's buddy dies. Check.

Cheesy one liners. Check.

I could go on......

Ha!

More interesting/qualified female character that basically does nothing through the whole movie but be the "reward" at the end for the useless "hero". Check.

Oh, and bonus points to dude writer/directors if she prances around in a bikini at some point.

I saw it with my parents in the theatre. I was a kid too, age 12. I thought it was super cool, but I was a 12 year old boy.

Watched it years later and wondered what I even saw in that film. Boys and their toys [emoji14]

And let's add into the fact that every once in awhile Hollywood gets it really wrong and tries to force an actor or actress on us as if he or she is really good looking and talented when he or she is neither. I have never understood the casting of Kelly McGillis in "Top Gun." There were better looking girls and better actresses in my high school's drama club.

I couldn't agree more. I never understood that either.

And better than Tom Cruise. Yet they keep putting him in every movie to this day. Sorry Tom Cruise fans. Well, not really.

Two thoughts - cool, you and my girlfriend agree on McGillis as, I've found, it's usually just a guys-don't-like-her thing and, two, I'm no Cruise fan (I agree with Zombie_61 above who said that Cruise either plays himself or shows he can't act), but his movies, overall, have made Hollywood a lot of money, so they'll keep putting him up there as long as they do.

Now you've made me wonder if he is making them money. I guess so. Or he knows something or has something on them. ??? :) "Put me in every movie, or else."

He puts himself in his own movies. Nuff said. [emoji14]
So, basically, he's paying people off to go see his own movies? How did we get here?
Is that like they say about lawyers defending themselves? They have a fool for a client. Tom hasn't realized he's directing/producing an idiot.

So is Tom Cruise actually losing his own money making movies just so that he can star in them?
