Thanks for the reply MJS I was actually asking about the .338 Lapua mag sniper rifle,and being from Canada I never even considered boar hunting as it's probably not as popular here.Just was thinking if you can pick something off from over a half mile away?I understand big caliber rifles as I own a .300 Winnie mag, strictly for moose or buffalo if I ever get a draw,but don't think I'd start shooting at anything over 200 yrds even if I can hit it.

Justin gave a good write up on the Lapua. Hog hunting isn't that popular here either, but the damn things were let go / escaped, and they sure tear up your property. Hogs and Coyotes are probably the worst annoyances these days. I know several guys who have a hunting license solely to protect their Tyson's chicken farms. One old friend said that he was out by the dead chicken pit and all he could hear was the sounds of chewing.

I dunno, taking down one of those land whales might require a heavier calibur than anything I've got. Biggest I've shot is a 50 beowolf and I'd only give it a 20% chance at taking one clean.

Are 1 in 5 of them clean before you shoot?

My .338 Lapua mag is strictly a long range target gun. I do occational competitive shooting and it's my weapon of choice due to it's amazing accuracy. Yes, it could be used for hunting as I do go for elk, but that would involve me swapping the glass on it...and I don't want to.

Thanks Justin that was basically what I had thought,not really practical for hunting unless the prey is dressed in camo.More of a fun toy to play with.Elk yea my .300 works well and I'm old school when it comes to Bambi's uncle,I'll take my Marlin 30-30 over anything,unless someone wants to by me a Husqvarna .270

For deer I shoot a .308, .303, or 7.65mm. Hogs, its the 50 beowolf or whatever toy I happen to want to shoot at the time.

The .338 would be practical in areas like where I used to hunt where you shoot from one ridge to the next or up from a valley to a ridge.

My only thought on this is I've got friends that want me to take them out and they tell me they can shoot well 250-300yds.type thing,I tell them that that's real good but it will suck real bad when your're packing that moose,elk whatever out of the bush by yourself from 800 feet over dead falls,stumps,rocks what ever,they ask why they would have to do that,it's quite simple if you want to shoot at those distances I'm not willing to work that hard so your on your own.Everyone thinks hunting is a lot of fun and for me it's enjoyable but it turns into a lot of work as soon as you shoot something.IMHO

Hunting is work. I don't hunt for enjoyment, I hunt for meat. If I want to shoot for enjoyment I go to the range and put holes in paper or knock down steel.

Not sure about it not being enjoyment,yes we hunt for food but you don't find it enjoyable to take your guns for a ride in the back country?Yes we're trying to find something to put in the freezer that's why it's called hunting and not shooting,and I know I eat lots of track soup but I had a good day none the less.

No, I won't say I don't enjoy it. But the purpose of me going out in the first place is to bring down an animal that will feed me for a while. If I don't need the meat...I don't go hunt. I can go for a ride and shoot my guns out in the woods...don't have to kill anything to do it. Hogs are about the only time I'll shoot something living that I don't really have a need for, but even that is serving the purpose of pest control.

Yea that's the purpose of hunting ,but i figured you living just outside of Dallas you'd find getting away from the city environs for a while would be enjoyable even if you're not successful every time?

I can get out in to the brush without having to hunt. Nice thing about being single...if I wanna go spend a weekend in the woods I can just load up and go. Me and the dog take the Jeep out to get dirty fairly often.

Taking an animal is something I don't go out to do, just to do it. I haven't gone for deer or elk in a loooooong time. If I want to shoot, I shoot targets or as I said, once or twice a year go to my buddy's place and clear out hogs.

All that said, I do enjoy hunting. I'm not a sit in a stand and wait for them to come to me type either. I like the challenge of pitting my clumsy feet against a wild creatures senses.

I hear you on the deer stand thing not my cup of tea either it's similar to sitting in a duck blind in a swamp waiting for them to come in,as bout as exciting as watching paint dry.Trophy hunters should be banned if they don't use what they kill,filling the freezer has been the only reason for me to hunt.That's just my opinion and it's probably going to rile some feathers,oh well sue me!!

I think my farthest successful shot was 356 yards(groundhog)..or it could have been the treetop crow at more than that(figuring in the tall tree). Good excercise..and beautiful scenery in southern Indiana. Plentiful Groundhogs and Fox. Once shot a rare multi-colored marmot. Other than that..Bird hunting stole my soul. Kicking up covey of quail..or reaching out for a Pheasant.
I hunted for years...and then realised that trained dogs made it so much better for birds and rabbit. Man..what fun!

I was once walking through a field with my .243 over my shoulder just kicking clods since I hadn't seen much huntable wildlife after a long morning. I happen to look over to the edge of the field and saw two grey fox pups standing by a roll of old baling wire. As I lowered the rifle..they saw me. Their den was under the bale of wire at the bottom of a big sprawling elm tree. I walked over to look in the den when I heard something scraping and sliding down a low hung branch of the tree throwing peices of bark all over me. I whirled..flipped the safety and snapped off a shot at a big furry blob(just what it was I didn't know). The blast blew it out of the tree into the field. Scared the hell out of me. Still shaking..I walked over to it. (You won't believe this) but it was the biggest groundhog that I had ever seen...and YES..in a tree! Evidentally..I had scared it too..and it lost it's footing and started sliding toward me down a limb. At the time I could of sworn it was a mountain lion coming at me out of a tree behind my back! (We don't have them in Indiana). Anyhow a hot .243 round hit at just a few feet isn't pretty. True story.

My buddy Bruce Neal(in case you want to confirm)was out deer hunting and a cougar walked out in front of him about 30 feet,he had his rifle in his hands loaded and he swears that he didn't think he'd be able to get a shot off in time if the cat decided he was lunch.Nothing happened they just stood there looking at each other for a minute or so and the cat wandered away.
