I have the unfortunate personality combination of being obsessively meticulous as well as being unable to operate at my best till im down to the wire...

Indeed! This is going to be a long Christmas break, what with studying Latin, getting ready for two exams (one of them Latin), prepping for a module on the Crusades, and doing a PhD proposal.

I need a drink right now.

I'm exactly the same. Exactly the same! I think it's actually these particular personality traits in combination that make people drawn to academia (I'm in the final year of my PhD)... so many, and I'd even go as far as to say most, professional academics work in exactly this way.

There's something about obsessive curiosity, intellectual masochism, terrible organisation and obsessive attention to detail that make people perfect for the ivory tower...

Advice...

Feel and embrace the burn that is academic exhaustion as it pays HUGE dividends in the long run. If you want real fun, try an American style Ph.D. program! The first year of any US doctoral program is so adversarial between faculty and students and so competetive among students that it's really an interesting psych experiment. My impression is that European doctoral programs aren't quite like this as they are more research based while we in America have hellish courses to contend with for two or three years before dissertation research begins.

I hear ya on the deadline thing - I took journalism, and it's all last-second deadlines. You learn to love it, but the profs in your other courses don't!

Day Two with no sleep is fine, but make sure you catch some zee's (I guess in Canada, it should be "catching some zeds") sometime soon. In my college days, I did a sleep deprivation "bender" of five days. Things start getting strange at that point...

Best of luck to all of you facing exams and tight deadlines!

Sounds familiar.

Sounds like we need a separate group for insane (vintage) graduate students.

What's everyone studying?

I have my two biggest exams tomorrow (Constitutional law) and Tuesday (Business Organizations). It's high-stress, and then you don't get your grades for a month!

The month long winter break would be a blessing if I didn't have a 40 page paper to write, not to mention find a job.

I'm studying Applied Communication.

I too wait until the last minute to begin working on papers. I just cannot focus on them without sufficient stress. [huh]

ah yes, its finals week for everyone! Thankfully I only have one more big thing this semester, and that's an English portfolio due tomorrow morning. The tough psychology and sociology papers and finals are over! Hang in there everyone!

I'm doing a PhD in art history and philosophy. The current title is "The Post-Modified Body: The visual and ontological consequences of invasive corporeal transformation", though it may well change before the year is out!
