Elbow patches

Anyone know if it's feasible to remove the elbow patches from a tweed jacket? Are they just stitched on, and popping the stitches and a little steam makes them go away, or is there perhaps some kind of adhesive underneath that would just leave a mess?
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

You can test it:

reach into the sleeve and grab the fabric below the patch from the inside,
with the other hand grab the the leather patch and see whether they are glued together or not.

Some of the newer (lesser quality) jackets may use some kind of glue... normally it should be only sewn on.

If the the latter, a good steam will remove the traces as you mentioned.

If you find the leather glued, soaking the elbow in cool water with a little Dawn Original liquid detergent (the blue stuff) might soften up the glue if it's water-soluble. You could go ahead and wash the entire jacket if you'd like, so long as the fabric is colorfast. PM me if you haven't hand washed wool (if it's wool), and I'd be happy to give you some input.
