When exactly did blazers and sportcoats get the leather patches on them? I never see them in the old catalogs but keep thinking they are originally English. Can anyone help?

I have been told late 1960's which is what I thought. I dunno about any of you, even though I hate 60's and 70's wear, patches can look good on some blazers and I mean some!
