Jeanavive and all, as my mostest favourite part of wartime history is Egypt and North Africa, especially the whimsy and whim of the Anglo allies whilst there, I thought you all may appreciate these LIFE pics- firstly a lengthy series on the famous Shepheards Hotel in Cairo including staff and barmen, managers and skilled workers, and scene's of the garden lounges, bars and various back of house areas of this fascinating hotel, during the war. Following that is some scenes that any Allied servicemen will well remember when on leave in Cairo!!! Enjoy, as I was over the moon when I discovered these pics!
Open your packet of V's, get your fly whisk handy and relax in the cane chair while you check these pics out;

Oh, my. What wonderful images. Such an amazing contrast to when I was there 18 years later (1962). Of course the British presence was completely erased. When our ship docked at Alexandria, a whole platoon of armed soldiers swarmed onto the ship, taking posts at every corridor. I can assure you, this was the ONLY place, which included 6 countries (in 17 days!) where anything like that happened. This was at the peak of Nasser's power.
Seeing all that nice frosty beer reminded me that the only place I was able, like any American kid, to get a glass of real whole pasteurized milk, was Cairo, at the Nile Hilton. Everywhere else in the Eastern Mediterranean it was unavailable.
The streets of Cairo, on the other hand were identical. We found a guide, his name was Hassan, who had a car (2 tone green 55 Chevy). He took us all over. We went to the Mosque of Omar (an absolute must see) where we took off our shoes and put on little canvas slippers. We went to Ali Ding Dong's Bazaar (I'm not making this up), where my mother bought a LOT of souvenirs (several of which I still have, actually most of which).
We saw the Cairo Museum (King Tut's stuff). We stopped in the middle of the city and had a huge frosty glass of sugar cane juice, first time I had ever had it. Incredibly delicious and refreshing, Then, on top of that, Hassan insisted that we have another huge glass of mango nectar. We're talking street vendors, with a little squeezer, and a bunch of sugar cane stalks sticking our of his cart. We decided that this was one time to throw caution to the wind, microbe wise. Luckily, we were not penalized abdominally. It was delicious. I remember the sensation to this very day.
Oh, my. What a wonderful, wonderful place Egypt is.
Maybe I'll dig out the big scrap book my mother compiled and post some pics.
Enjoy, enjoy. Take pictures with your camera, but also with your mind.

An Italian title: "El Alamein: La Linea del Fouco" was released 2002. Think "PLATOON" in the North African desert. The movie, Italian with English subtitles in 11 segments, is on youtube.

Thanks, Story, for that link! From the few minutes I've seen so far, the film does resemble an Italian version of "Platoon" (the lead even resembles Charlie Sheen!). Being of mostly Italian ancestry (although my ancestors arrived here before WWI), I am interested in the Italian side of WWII. Molte grazie!
