I don't understand sniping. I just decide what my limit is for an item and I'm done. Win or loose [huh].

Sniping works the same way, only the program places your bid in the last seconds of the auction. It might be the case that the amount of your snipe bid (programmed earlier in the day/week) has already been exceeded. In that case, there's no harm. What confounds me are all of the people who bid on something at any point before the last moments of an auction. They alert everyone else to demand for the item (by driving up both price and number of bids) and, unless their bid is unusually high (which it almost never is), they are outbid anyway. Early bids almost never win.

There are exceptions. I have won some auctions that have, for some reason or other, gone under the radar and I was the only bidder. If I notice no activity on an item that I am not in desparate need of I will often place a low starting bid, and if I win I win, if not, meh.

It truly isn't my usual strategy but I had a momentary lapse in reason, decided I had a price I was willing to pay, and said "what the heck.. let fate decide". But yeah definitely the principle of "sniping" is probably my usual strategy, though I do keep it somewhat old-school honorable and intend on being there finger on the bid button in person. There is the "fun" factor there... The thrill of the hunt.

Oh agreed.. Guess it figures if I get enough time to get a bid in pretty much at what I'm willing to pay, in certain auctions, or if I'm just hoping to score a silly deal. win some, lose some.. Probably win more than I need to.

This is incorrect. I have beaten a snipe program many times. It's not the snipe, it's the amount you are willing to spend. And yes, I have fast typing fingers.

That is my strategy, too. I put what my max is & let it ride. If a winner's max is $1 more & he does via Sniping or manual, it beats me just the same. Don't see how waiting until the last minute changes any of that...[huh]

Herzen, that is a really nice hat! I don't like brim up because usually they are flanged tight and look odd but that has almost an even, light lord's hat curl to it. Very nice!

The seller said it's from the 40's, which I doubt somehow...

Exactly 4and1. It takes the "fence sitters" out of the running. You still need to be the high bidder as Tom pointed out. If someone is committed to get the item at whatever cost, a snipe is of no help.

I win about 90% of what I want.
By putting in a relatively low bid in the beginning, I give the "greenhorns" one chance to bid against me, saving my top bid for,....shall we say "later".

Several years ago I learned how to keep from running the price up on an item that I'm willing to pay a fair price for. And no; I don't have a "snipe program".

Brock arrives

From Snyder's Stetson Hats and the John B. Stetson Company:

In 1935, as it became increasingly difficult to market their hats overseas, Stetson began setting up plants in other countries to thwart the tariff restrictions. Their first foreign plant was located in Canada. Stetson "acquired a substantial interest" in the Wolthausen Hat Corporation in Brockville, Ontario. One of the largest manufacturers of men's fur hats in Canada, Wolthausen producing [sic] Brock hats and other lines known throughout the Dominion. These continued to be produced, along with Stetsons. It was the first time Stetson hats had ever been produced outside of Philadelphia. Other foreign branches were soon opened in Mexico, Australia and elsewhere.

The Brock arrived today, and as I suspected (and hoped), it's as close to a Playboy duplicate as I can imagine. Olive-green with a wonderful and imaginative ribbon, soft and floppy. Interesting that it has a sweatband stamp from Chesterton, Indiana, given Brock was in Canada. The top pic captures the olive color best.

What an absolutely beautiful hat! Seems like there have been more really nice hats lately, and in a wide assortment of colors and sizes.

Looking forward to seeing how this one looks bashed and worn.
