Can I get a WTF from my fellow loungers? I’ve been watching this appear on Etsy for a while now - but now that it’s crossed over to eBay I figured I ought to bring it to everyone’s attention. Scrapping hat parts & making false, inauthentic, “antique” Stetsons. Don’t let the AI photo fool you. Just scroll thru the photos! Doesn’t take too sharp of an eye to see what’s wrong here. I’d hope that eBay authenticators would deny this before it lands at your doorstep.

Unfortunately, it won't be the only one on eBay. Many a "grandfather" has lived and died presenting "remade" classics.

Many of these on eBay (and eBay DOES NOT GIVE A $#@%) AND according to the sellers (and A I) ALL hats are Open Roads AND were in the family since at least the Civil War!;)

Yes, I've been watching this guy. I can't recall, but he may operate under 2 different names. I bought one hat from him some months ago and got suspicious about it. Looks like he's gotten worse or more bold about what I consider counterfeiting Stetson hats by mixing parts from different hats and other crimes.

I’ve picked up on that too, Mike!
I understand repurposing hat bodies into “art pieces” but what’s going on here is just fraud.

I saw one old Stetson? cowboy hat that looked like he'd taken the sweatband from a Stetson bowler and stitched it upside down into the cowboy hat because the original stitch edge of the sweatband was too deteriorated to use! I called him on it and he swore I was wrong. I told him he was better off just to sell the hats the way they were and stop monkeying around with them.

I've seen this guy's listings and they always were way above the price I'm willing to pay for a hat so I never looked too closely.

What am I supposed to see here? Did he re-use the sweatband from an early bowler and put it in a newer stetson body?

I'm not terribly interested in a Boss of the Plains so I'm not well versed in what they look like, but don't they have that engraved on the sweat (along with maybe raw edge or kettle finish?)?

Had a guy send an offer on a hat with a note “needs to be cleaned and blocked” - keep in mind this hat is immaculate - I’m like whatever dude, accept the offer - an hour later he requests I cancel the order “ordered by mistake”.

Dude sent an offer and knows hat lingo and he ordered by mistake? W/E - I refunded his money - but give me a break - I was ten seconds away from printing the shipping label - I almost sent it out of sheer annoyance but it would have been more trouble than it was worth

It appears I have made a tactical error. After throwing away Lord knows how many dozens of boxes from my own purchases, I finally thought… hmmm… perhaps I should save some of these just in case. So naturally, I started saving the big, pretty ones with little hat holders and whatnot.

Thankfully, at some point I started saving all my boxes, which is how I discovered that shipping a small box is incredibly cheap compared with shipping a slightly larger box. Apparently a couple of inches of cardboard can be worth an astonishing amount of money.

Having now shipped all my small boxes, I am forced to consider other sources for future shipping containers, should they become necessary.

In other words, I spent months carefully saving exactly the wrong boxes.

Yes if you can keep it under about 36 inches I believe it tends to be much cheaper. I ordered some uline 15x13x7 specifically to ship hats without a hat box. I'd love to find somewhere to buy just the chipboard insert that comes in a capas box to help keep the crown crisp.

I make them with inserts the same size as my box and a box cutter. Not elegant, but it works. I believe Capas also sells their boxes, wholesale, in smaller quantities.

I've been kind of unhappy with the side lift on my Eddy bros outback, I've steamed and flattened the brim many times but the lift always come back.
I wear it anyways and have made the best of it, but I'm looking for something else.

I don't know exactly what I want, so I have been looking on eBay for something else cheap I can experiment with.
I just found this golden state for $13 shipped, condition isn't perfect but for the money I can experiment with it.

I just received that Golden Gate when I got off work today and promptly started on making a project out of it .

I flattened the brim gave it some drop in the front and back.
then I did my best attempt at a classic cattleman's crease with a mule kick before deciding to distress it a little bit by toasting it lightly with a torch.
I figured why not since it's got a couple months bites already.

for now I'm using the band I'd previously made and was recently trying out on my Eddy bros outback.

I think the crown is too round for a proper cattleman's crease, but I kinda like it this way.
it keeps the hat from looking too western.
I like a little western, but wasn't going for a cowboy hat.
