Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

A quick question. For shipping costs (to Japan), does eBay calculate the rate or does the seller set the price? One reason I haven’t placed a bid on eBay before is some very high shipping costs. Last year, I purchased a Homburg from Brent. He sent it before I paid, so I paid the actual cost of $28. Looking on eBay, most are charging at least twice that and some up to four times that amount. Or is it just different shipping methods?

It can go either way as the seller has the option to set a fixed shipping price. I just use eBays International Shipping service and they calculate the rate based on the box size and weight I specify. Saves me having to fill out all the forms, etc.

If you ever see a hat of mine you would be interested in (almost all I show that are not a 7-1/2 are probably going back out the door) then give me a shout. I'll be happy to deal with international shipping on a direct sale / trade for a Lounger.

Thanks, Bob. I was actually looking at your hats, which got me wondering. I think the only one there that would fit me is the St. Regis, but I’m not in the market for another curled brim right now.

I use a re-mailing service. They give me a US address and repackage and ship my stuff fedex. It might work for you, or it might just be an extra cost.

At times the purchase story gets messy. I could not im agine and make up a story to the delivery of an Ebay hat I got last night .

OK, last night I received a delivery from FedEx. I won and paid for a hat in a box shipped from Michigan. I checked the side and garage doors - no package. Back door, deck - no package. The seldom used formal front door - an enormous package. A bubble and clear wrapped package 4.5' x 20". I carried the awkward package inside into the entry. The wrap had a label with my info and on the back was a label for someone in S.Dakota. Inside the pubble wrap I eased out a shipping document showing that the package contained a bumper cover for a 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe . It was humerous as the package was big and not anything like a hat. Hard to wear a bumper cover.

Early morning I tried to contact FedEx. CS number was total frustration to get a CS rep to address my auto bumper. Several calls and failing to get a human on the line, I headed out to the local FedEx store. It took some conversation with the counter person saying I wished to return to FedEx the bumper as I did not order it. They had a hard time with that. They kept saying they delivered it successfully. Yes it was successful to one address lablel. Not the second label (other side). Mis-labeled. Eventually they labeled it a "mistake when accepted "and took the bumper from me. Jeepers - a hard conversation from my perspective.

Now contacts with the seller. Two messages exchanged that go something to the effect that the "box and hat show delivery. " One message nsuggested that I check the package again. Patience was exercised and I assured the vendor that I did not recieve a hat, but rather a Chevrolet bumper. I do not even have a Chevrolet was my final sentence in the message to the vendor. I added a laughing emogi.

The vendors reply was - the package shows it was delivered. No RSVP to my last message from the vendor. I did suggest that I should wait another day to see if anything arrives and then he should file a missing package with FedEx.

I am frustrated, but amused at the messy situation. The Chevy bumper/hat saga continues.

I’m anxious to see the “new with tags” part.

It arrived today. The bad: it was shipped in a shoebox. (I opted not to take the “original” Resistol hatbox).

The good: It really does appear to be in new unworn condition. (no tags, however, not even a label under the sweat).

After a deep freeze, I’ll post more photos. The felt is different from the lined Playboy I have, so I’m pretty sure it is from a different time period, but it could be because it really is new and my other one is broken in.

Ended up telling a friend about this hat and she bought it. I know it’s an old hat but not how old and don’t know it’s worth. Can anyone help me?

They pop up on a regular basis here on auctions sites. They don't fetch high prices usually. Haven't seen many myself but the ones I did see were made of woolfelt. Because they're a traditional hat, they don't change at all, so the age is difficult to determine. They're worn fairly high on the head and the crown isn't very deep (again: as a general rule). As the brim is intended to be flat, the oval shape is important, but the hats never say which oval it is (European manufacturers don't use the regular oval, long oval distinction). Get a wrong fitting one and the brim will go wonky on you. Max had one made in beaver with higher crown on it.

The small headed gal that I shared the listing with doesn’t know anything about these hats, either. And so I won’t tell her what I’ve later learned about its monetary worth.
Since it appears to be old, especially if that hat box is original, maybe she can continue to appreciate it’s ethnic history?
