This tan Cavanagh was sitting there with a two dollar opening bid till the very last seconds of the auction. I had thrown in a $7 bid figuring if anyone wanted it they could still get a great deal on it. Apparently no one wanted it more than six dollars and thirty eight cents worth.

Nice little hat... appears to have a Cavanagh edge.

I got this old cruddy Mallory Aristocratic. It feels dried out, should i steam it right away? Does anyone know of a talented yet fair pricing hatter? I knew i was going to have to refurbish, will have the sweatband changed, maybe the ribbon but will see...

Nice find... I bet it will clean up nicely. A real good brushing and then Some steam for shape if you like.

Thanks! I really like it. The moth and beat up ribbon don't bother me, they seem to add to the character of it. Can even go sweatbandless, but i think i would want to protect the felt. I will brush and steam. Quick shower on top too aggressive??

That sweatband is toast and will need to be replaced. If the felt is in good condition you could send it to Scott at Fine Vintage Fedoras. He does good work at reasonable prices. For a cleaning, reblocking, new sweatband, flanging the brim, and shipping expect to pay over $100 no matter who you use.

If that’s where you’re going with it, why not give it a try? Sometimes cleaning with water can cause the hat to shrink some and to taper. If you don’t have a block to let it dry on I wouldn’t get aggressive with the shower cleaning. More of a sponge bath. You can also try a naphtha soak. You can also use a hat sponge to LIGHTLY sand the felt and address some of the worse areas. While you’re at it, sew in a new sweatband yourself. It’s not rocket science, and who cares if it takes you two hours?

Everything Brent said +1. Only thing I say though is make sure you give it a real good brushing first. You would be surprised how much it can wake up the felt. Also brushing out all that old dust is a good idea before you get it wet whether with steam or a sponge. That old dust can turn to mud and cause discoloration if you aren’t careful. Especially on a lighter felt.

I like it. I really like the look of it. How bad is the damage? Limited to the underside of the brim?
