Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

Snipers from three sides late at night, but I had set a high bid and gone to bed. A late-40s, 7 1/4. Felt looks like some of the last soft 3X of the generation.

I was one of the unsuccessful snipers. The sizing was an uncertainty. I asked the seller to look behind the sweat for any labels with the size and they replied that the size was “7-1/2.” The photos of the proportions make it look smaller than that, but that’s what the seller said. Without more confidence in the sizing and wasn’t willing to go higher. Since the listing only gave the size as “M” how did you get 7 1/4?

It’s a beautiful hat and I bet the felt is wonderful! I’m glad it’s going to a someone who can truly appreciate it.

Had some good luck on ebay. Purchased this 50's - 60's OR with the idea that I would take it apart and size it up form the listed size of 6 7/8. Turns out the size tag is present and is my size of 7 1/4. I am currently taking it apart and cleaning it. I think I can reuse the original SB, I hope so anyway. But it needed a good cleaning and reblocking so I hope it works out. For $43.00 it was worth the risk.

Thanks Vic. I have two early 3Xs Last Drops without oilskin or plastic, which I assume likely predate the use of those materials. '48 would fit that timeframe.

In determining whether a hat pre or post dates the oilskin era I think requires some assumptions; the quality of felt and leather sweat, stars or maple leaf on the crest (pre-52), and shape of the inventory and reorder tags (smaller size in the 40s) are some indicators.

Maybe some of the big boys have more info.

A couple other variables:
Where does the liner seam being on the side vs at the rear fit in as well as the XXX’s placement? Above or below Stetson and then there’s the embroidered word Beaver on some.

I think that's right. I was going primarily by the oilskin and stars on the crest, but I think the oilskin dates approximately 48-52, and the stars on sweat crests began conversion in '52 (but bled over with some select models like the 100 and 7X CB).

By oilskin do you mean the band between the Sweatband and the body of the hat? If so I have a 1945 Miller Stockman catalog that shows the Stetson ad stating "New Oil Silk Sweat Resister- A separate Special Band of Oil Silk between the Leather Sweatband and the Body of the hat. A special value at no extra charge." If that is what you refer to it was available in 1945 according to this catalog.

We are referring to the material covering the embroidered liner. The covering was to keep the liner from getting hair products (hair gel etc..) on the liner. We have been referring to three different variations of the liner/covering.

The later clear plastic version.


And the version without a protective covering.

I believe so. I also think the first no cover Last Drop hats are likely only from the first two years of production.

We can’t ever be sure, but that’s my call on dating those hats.

Both an eBay victory and defeat?

I offered below the starting bid on this 7X CB just for kicks really. A 50s hat, I’m not really sure where it fits in the decade and I didn’t feel so hot on spending on another CB when I already have a couple. Besides a 3 1/2 inch brim is probably too big for me and still too small for Joao...

...but I figured, why not make an offer? We ended up countering and accepting an $85 price, postage included.

However, to be definitive i believe one needs to consider other variables in conjuncton including labels as Daniel mentioned. Also, liner seam location, other tags and then there’s leather sweat materials, on and on.
Or, the quickest answer is to proclaim the wrong answer and wait for the experts to debunk in short order.
It would be a good conversational thread.
