The moth damage is visually unappealing(if actually visible when worn), but usually the moths are long gone and precautions such as cleaning, vacuuming, sunlight, freezing or moth sprays or packets easily end the lives of any stragglers(larvae). Very early hats that are entirely free of any moth damage(same for other clothing items) barely exist.

Robert is right - very few pristine examples are left. Damn those moths!

Moth's don't really bother me unless ithe damage is overboard. I own some hats where you can see mothing if you look for it, but it won't put me off from wearing the hat. It adds character in my eyes. Would I like a pristine 60+ year old item? Sure, who wouldn't!? But the odds of that happening are slim, unless you have a time traveling machine.

I saw that but I don't think a 60s Stetson 100 is anything special. That price seems pretty good, though.

I have an early 60's model Stetson 100 that is very special. Incredible felt, nicely finished. Not too impressed by the late 60s/early 70s 100s but you can't lump all 60s together.
Where do you get your stand that a early 3X contains "quite a lot of beaver"? I agree that 3X/Fifteen is where beaver starts to be mixed in but not sure if it is more than 10 to 25%.

Recently sold hat block from ebay. Not mine. Wonder if it's an original Stratoliner block?

Mostly agree.
3X means nothing as to Beaver content--think 3 x 5 =15($). There is no consistent formulation nor felt finish for this quality level. The 100's have a consistent 100% Beaver content(likely Belly) and are very smooth finishes. Late ones get very stiff and pounced to near cardboard evenness--still the same fur content.

I know nothing on the Penn-Craft Division, quality and such, but I can't wait for it to arrive!

I saw in that particular auction that the seller claimed that Penn-Craft was part of the Penn-Craft commune of the 1940s. But I emailed the historical society for the Penn-Craft Historic community and they said they knew nothing about any hat company being located in the commune.

Does anyone have anything more definitive on this Penn-Craft hat company?

Does anyone know anything about the Penn-Craft division? I searched, but may have not looked hard enough. Are they rare, hows the quality, why were they created as a Division of Stetson, and such.

Also,

I just won this Stetson Special. Paid a little more than I wanted to, but it looks to be in very nice condition.

Lefty, that is one nice Gold Medal! I really enjoy that blue/grey color it shows in the photos.

OCMH, I like that one, a lot! I can't wait to see better photos of that!

Here is a Lennox Derby that never recieved bids, so I talked to the seller, and was able to aquire it. No idea on the age of the hat or the company, but the seller said the shop had a fire, and then was ruined due to the water damage that ensued from the blaze.

Here are the auction photos.
