I've just purchased a rather nice vintage grey Stetson fedora - Sovereign quality, but exact type unknown.
It looks to be in really good condition from the photos, other than possibly a bit mis-shapen:

This being my first vintage purchase, does anyone have a specific advice on possible cleaning & re-blocking - are there any specialists in the UK?
- Or does it just need wearing?

Got a good hat brush? I always inspect, clean the sweatband, liner & brush the felt VERY well the used hats I get. This one does look like it could use a blocking but just may need some hand shaping. I wipe the sweatband & liner with an antibacterial wipe that you find in First Aid kits, then use a leather conditioner on the sweatband. If it has a funky odor, it goes in a large bag with crumpled newspaper for a few days. If I am worried about critters, it goes in the freezer for a few days too. HTH

No, I did not check our German bay for bowlers for some time. They are to scaresly showing up [huh]

Obviously it is worth screening it from time to time

Where are you in the uk mate
there is a hatter in Essex who has been in the trade for years. Does blocking and reshaping.

I can't tell if it's silk or fur (would be worth a lot if it is silk given that it seems to have survived without much of it wearing off!)

What would you suggest for a leather conditioner? The only things I know of are Saddle Soap and Neatsfoot Oil (or Mars oil etc), neither of which appears suitable for a hat band.

Neatsfoot Oil is good but NOT Neatsfoot COMPOUND = compound breaks down stitching. HTH

I came across this Stetson on ebay today - at 6 7/8, not my size at all, but I was curious as to how they came up with the $400 BIN price. And the starting bid of $100 seems too steep as well.

One of the better ebay questions I've seen - from a live auction, for a hat with a cav edge:

Q: The brim width....2 and 11/16ths? I'm sorry, but that doesn't work out to anything I can comprehend. If I got this hat, I'd need the brim to be pretty close to 3" all the way around, so i could do a dimensional cut on it to make it 2.75" in the front and back and 2.25" on the sides....is there enough brim to do that? Also...can you tell me what the open crown measurement is on the hat? Thanks! Christian
