I think I just got a 7 3/4 Stetson 100 with the case for $125 shipped. I started by sending the seller a bunch of questions, but figured that if I didn't pull the trigger, someone would beat me to it. So now, my questions are sort of "please don't send this to me if it's a 6 3/4, or somehow measures 7 3/4, or says 3x, 4x or some other X on the inside." it's a tense sort of excitement

No cattleman has a 6 3/4 inch head circ!

Ha! I never looked closely at the penny.

The seller says the hat is a size 7 3/4, but didn't explain how she got there; it was a short email.
I guess We'll see what happens with the quality designation when it gets here.

The Hobo by Dobbs

Picked up this mystery hat today:
The Hobo by Dobbs

Hobo.jpg

It didn't sell the first time it was listed, so I bid on it the second time around on a lark. Pretty sure it's NOT a man's hat, though I'm perplexed as to everything else about it. It looks like an unblocked hat body with little shellac that they slapped a label and pin on. Also looks like it's meant to be some kind of traveling hat.

Any ideas on the era? Since I know very little about women's hat styles, my only guess is the '20s, as it seems like a cloche style, something I could imagine on a flapper. I also expect the name Hobo wouldn't have been popular once we got to the Depression. Were hats like this popular in the '50s or '60s?

It says the name is trademarked, but I could find no record of it on uspto.gov, so that was no help.

You're right, that is odd. It doesn't look like a normal cloche or flapper style hat to me. But as with you, I don't really know much about those things. I look forward to hearing what experienced opinion yields.

How big is the fit? Would it be an adult or perhaps a kid? If a kid, maybe it's a Halloween costume or a toy-like hat for kids from the 1940s or 50s?

Hard to say as to the fit, I'll just have to wait until I have it in hand. The seller listed dimensions of a 9" crown and 25" brim circumference. As for a kids' hat, probably not. Dobbs did offer a Dobbs Junior line for young boys, but they were scaled-down versions of adult hats. This one doesn't say Dobbs Junior, and I don't know whether they offered hats for young girls.
