I was watching that one too, but as I have just won that green Knox Premier and have also promised to slow down a bit, I decided not to bid.

The color combo reminds me of my Mallory Ten Cravenette.

Thanks, Mario! I sort of expected you to be in on this one. I'll just have to see what the color is in broad daylight when it comes. My experience has been that auction pictures give an approximation of true color, at best. But I really hope it has the purple tinge.

It looks like a great hat. Congratulations! I would have bid but I was afraid it would be a bit small. My size 7 Portis fedora is a small 7 and just at the edge of my comfortable wear zone.

My first successful bid off the bay. It looked rough in the pictures but after I cleaned it and reshaped it it's fine. It had a couple "rough" spots but they sanded right off. It's a small 7 3/8 but I'm real happy with it.

Bill, that box is awesome! I remember my Grandmother going to the '64 World's Fair (huge deal - she was from rural N. Louisiana) and bringing back souvenirs (mine was a paperweight of that skeletal globe).

What memories that post brought back,....my dad took us all to the fair several times, (we only lived a dozen or so miles away),...and I bought one of those "Alpine" looking hats with a huge peacock feather in it and had my name embroidered on the front.
While walking down the stairs at one of the exhibits I was completely dumb-founded by the fact that one of the hosts of the exhibit seemed to know me, calling me by name and saying "Hello Tommy".

I guess I never was too bright.

Talked the seller of this hat down a bit, still paid quite a lot. ..140 shipped to Canada, soooo about 115$ for the hat....

i have been getting a few hats of the bay that have been sitting in the box for 50-60 years and the color of the hat is a few shades darker than it should be due to the dust that has accumulated. I am having a really hard time brushing it out, I tried scout on one of my hats but I did not like the way it changed the feel of the felt...anyone come up with any good tricks to take out the ingrained dust...?

I am having a really hard time brushing it out, I tried scout on one of my hats but I did not like the way it changed the feel of the felt...anyone come up with any good tricks to take out the ingrained dust...?

Its a really nice hat and you paid a lot. Best to be totally and thoroughly cleaned to come out uniform in color and regain its proper shape-holding capabilities and surface texture. Professional work would be worthwhile. You will be amazed what a difference it can make.

Agreed. I start by sponging and brushing the hat myself, but if I have any doubts at that point, and I plan to keep it, like rlk, I send it to Optimo. It is definitely worth the small investment.

Being from Canada The shipping costs are huge when shipping hats to the states... so I would like to try and reduce shipping...

On a really dusty hat I first fire up the air compressor and use an air blower attachment on it.

my first Dobbs

just got this from ebay

Overall it's in very good shape but the sweat is disintegrating rapidly. My forehead was covered with little black flakes after wearing it for 15 minutes.
It's stamped Dobbs and Crowleys on the band and has someone's phone number written on the lining.

This is the biggest size 7 1/2 I've ever come across. I'm a big 7 1/2 or a small 7 5/8 and this is big on me even with the original shims under the sweat.

I'd put this early 40's at very latest. Probably made by Long's Hats.

Do NOT use Mike the Hatter. Their work is awful.
I haven't heard of the other outfit.
