This seller just sold three 1930s Borsalinos with the lable pictured. I throught it had been determined that the lable pictured was after Borsalino moved some time iin the 60s which would make this hats much newer than 1930s?

They look much older than 1960s to me. RLK did some research on these Bulgarian Borsalinos that is convincing (in my opinion).

I have one and whatever the date, it's made of luscious thick, soft felt and the construction details are amazing. Hmmm - I don't think I've ever posted it. (Goes to see if cell phone is charged ....)

I also have one with that label, and while it might be '60s, it's certainly of the pre-move quality.

...and that is the label pic from today's auction of my new hat you just posted :)

OK, I confess: I did. It was too beautiful to let it go ...even though I already have a similar Borsalino, with a colour perhaps just a little bit darker than this one. None of my other hats comes up to these Borsalino's marked with XXXXX, felt-qualitywise.

This hat makes me wonder about something I should perhaps put up for discussion in the Borsalino Brotherhood: Does the X-XXXXX rating system for Borsalino's date from another (earlier?) period than the Qualitá/extra/extra/superiore/finissima system? Or were they used for different kinds of hats?
The folded Borsalino's in the white triangular boxes were marked with the X's. Do we have a time frame for those?

Hers is the post I was thinking of

Even from the 1970's , Borsalino hats are gems . Once the factory was moved to it's present location in 1986, it all went downhill from there .
The easiest way to tell the difference between pre 1986 and post for hats made for the US market is to look at the leather . If it says "Original House " then its an older hat . Once it says "Antica Casa " then we are talking modern Borsy.

That applies to Borsalinos made for the U.S. market. It does not apply to Borsos destined for the Euro market -- which have always used "Antica Casa".

Cheers,

That post pertains only to relatively modern Borsalinos sold in the USA market(80's>). Almost all the European models say Antica Casa as long as they were made in the original factory regardless of vintage.

tTL, rlk: thank: you for clearing up my misconception of the labeling on vintage non US market Borsalino hats. This is why I love the lounge there is something new and interesting to be learned every day. To be honest thoes Trionfo hats looked older than the 1987-move date. I over simplified Steven’s reference to Antica Casa on the label
By the way nice score with your new Trionfo Scott I will be looking next time one going back on the auction block

Dobbs Gay Blade, 7 1/8 - not the best condition, but a pretty rare hat

Yep Lefty, condition is a problem but it looked like it needed a good home so it will be coming to mine. It's a bit of a fixer-upper but, moth damage aside, could still scrub up ok. At worst it will be a pretty stylish beater - but I think we'll be able to rescue it.

It's rare you say?

Yep Feraud, I'm optimistic that between my local hatter and me we'll be able to rescue it.

Gotta love the name dontcha!? Language is a wonderfully evolving thing. Back then a 'gay blade' was a stylish young man. I can't lay claim to being either stylish or young, but if the hat scrubs up ok I'll at least be a bit closer to the former.

If you local hatter has experience with cleaning hats, yours will shape up nicely.

You have to wonder if anyone referred to themself as a "Gay Blade" back in the day.. :)

These hats seem scarce. I think Dhermann1 also owns one.
