Looks good, I'll bet there's an OR style ribbon under the pug.

Nope, nothing there...but given I have three Stetson Open Roads that are same size and almost exactly the same color, I might give one of them an 'enhancement'.

Thanks Dinerman. I haven't even touched it and the brim is almost back to normal - just one little bend on one corner. I remember reading a post here where someone received a bowler in a flattened box, and he re-steamed it to near perfect.

Dinerman's right. And it might have been me, Scott, only it wasn't a bowler...doubt that kind of stiff hat would have survived.

But I did receive a good hat (think it was the Royal Deluxe Stetson with wide asymetrical edge binding) packed into a standard one-ream stationary box about two inches thick...and the seller was so concerned about it arriving unharmed that she wrapped it around and around in bubble wrap to make sure it was well-padded, and to take up all that spare space.

I was too shocked to take pictures, but a little steaming and some spraying in critical places and it recovered to good as new. I couldn't believe it. A testimony to the quality of felt back then.

But those pics gave me a good hoot!

Mystery Solved

This is one of those auctions where you know the seller doesn't know much about hats. Here is the link.

I know there is no such thing as a Resistol Dobb's hat with self conforming band and Adam Fifth Avenue Quality. The chances were that it was a either an Adam hat in a Dobb's box or a Dobb's hat with the model Adam. I about went crossed-eyed looking over the picture.

Turns out that it is a simple Adam Fifth Avenue with a dense felt and a welted edge. No marks, no moth holes, and if it was worn it wasn't worn much.

The seller's description mentions the payment slip from Kauffman's on Christmas Eve. Well, the price on the slip is 18.95 while the price on the hat was 24.95. Somehow, I suspect a hatter on Christmas Eve is not going to knock off $6 (if that is a 1960's dollar that comes to $48) so it looks like the original hat is elsewhere.

Here is the inside. There is no model name, just Adam Fifth Avenue Quality Hat.

The color is olive and I shot in tungsten light with white balace and tweeked the brightness a bit. Can anyone of you give me an idea of what style and year this would be?

And here I am, unshaven and recovering from a hernia surgery yesterday not smiling too hard because it might hurt.

I was hoping for an Adam and I've been wanting a smaller brim just to see if my 6'5" 250# frame would look ok in it. It might not have been sold on Christmas Eve, but I feel like Santa paid a visit anyway

:) Got this Royal Stetson the other day,.....sweat's a little worn out and the liner's gone, but that didn't matter so much. I bought it with full intention of sending it on a journey to Chicago so Graham can do the full-blown rebuild!!

That way I'll have $160 total in what should a primo lid!

That will be a super hat. Post pics when you get it back. I'll keep an eye out around town for it.:)

I was just trying to help you out. I almost went for that Disney myself.

Hopefully someone else will elluminate us, but I think that tweed fedora could be something special - if nothing else, it is very attractive and has great, classic dimensions - a perfect summer hat. Good pick-up.

And thanks for helping me out, but after all my hard work getting the hat cache down to 12, I'm back up to 22 in a mere two weeks. I have decided to build a "Wall of Felt" - I'm thinking that since my girlfriend enjoys the stereo so much, this will improve the acoustics of the condo...yes, that's it - I'm doing it for her.

After a series of heart-breaking losses, I finally got this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370244579977&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBSA:US:1123

Now we'll see what the seller means by "tiny divits"...

This arrived today and is indeed a Knox Twenty. The "tiny divits" were the evidence of considerable moth activity. One hole at least goes clean through to the liner. Despite that, it is a lovely hat and I would wear it but for the fact that it is a 7 1/8!

Alas.

I have sent a message to the seller, so we'll see if he honors his pledge to provide refunds for improperly described items.

I'm having a hard time understanding how rilico's 3x from the 60's in a tiny 6 7/8 went for megabucks but this RARE 7 1/8 (originally 7 1/4) old boater couldn't even fetch $50!?

I'll tell you, the thought and care rilico puts into his copy is something to be admired. :D You can tell when it's his listing and I like opening them just to read what he's written, even though I find most of his hats are just too small.

As a long time customer of rilico, I like his listings. However, at the end of the BS, the product should speak for itself and this boater definitely does.

True enough. Some people just get swept up in the BS. :) As an experiment, would you ever write a rilico-esque listing? I would as an experiment in marketing - surely those big corporate bucks are spent somewhere.

"A spot of tea with that scone, milady?" is what Lord Kempsey said as he sat squarely onto the grassy bank. The river sparkled beneath the sunlight as their boat floated gently down the river. Dressed in a crisp linen suit, with an elegant Lanson Hubbard boater atop his head, he was the epitome of style and sophistication... lol

Were there a lot of watchers?
