This should be interesting...

I watched the original auction listing end and thought about throwing out a number when the format was relisted BIN with offer. The need to satisfy my curiosity didn't match my willingness to make a fair, respectable offer.

My hats off to you, Jim, for taking the plunge. I'll be looking forward to your future post(s) on it.

I blame Bob Roberts. He kept texting me and telling me to buy it (he does that a lot). After it expired, I threw out an offer, was counter-offered, countered that, and was accepted.

I have high hopes that it's going to clean up real nice.

I saw that and it didn't do much for me. Enjoy!

Someone tell me what I have for $28. A Mallory Panama with an Optimo'ish crease. It has the cloth tag, an 1823 label, a reeded sweat (taped not sewn) and a very tight weave. The straw is still very flexible, not stiff or brittle. The hat is dirty and I need to give it a good cleaning and some steam to smooth out the brim. I'll post more pics when I get it cleaned up.

4 1/4 finished crown, 1 3/4 black ribbon, 2 3/4 brim.

The sweat is in good shape but a little stiff and I don't want to put a lot of pressure on it. The block tag is intact under the sweat but I found no other markings. No markings on the top inside of the crown and no residue or discoloration to suggest there was ever anything attached. Originally sold at Griffith Smith Co. Mens Wear, York, PA. Is this a pre-Stetson Mallory?

Well, based on the 1823 date and tombstone logo, yes. Have you looked through The Mallory Mile for any other dating clues? Done any research on Griffith-Smith? Those are usually good ways to at least put a window on your hat's age.

I got this interesting Muench hat last weekend for $19 at a local antiques store. I had never heard of Muench but the hat has a quality feel and the liner looked legit. I did a little research on the name L.T. Muench and the only thing I could find were a couple of entries in the American Hatter from 1893, 1916 & 1923. I can't find anything else on Muench hats after 1923. The felt on the hat is in superb shape. The liner is stained but intact. The leather sweat is not bad but is not stiched in the rear. I am pleased with the hat and $19 is worth it no matter what. I am just curious about the hat and the manufacturer. I placed a post in "ask a question, get an answer" but nobody seems to know anything about them.

Here are some pics.

No research on the company yet. I did dig through the Mallory thread but found precious little on panama's or straws in general and was not sure how much info on the felts would carry over. As I recall, the 1817 logo started about the time Stetson took over (1946 as I recall) which was why my first guess was that this one was pre-Stetson. I'll do more digging tomorrow. Thanks.

Great hat! Really wonderful - the sweat, the weave, all of it.

I bid on an older (4-5 year's) Akubra Stylemaster Carbon Grey hat size 58 on eBay. It never dawned on me that I'd win it for $45 including shipping. It's arrived and it's in what I'd call like new condition. Packaging was not too bad.

My only complaint is that the owner/ seller had steamed it into almost a completely flat brim hat. . It had some flange remaining, but not a lot.

After about 30 minutes of steaming and shaping, I've got the flange of the brim looking pretty good. Next step is to get the brim to curve like I prefer.
