That is a nice one, indeed! Maybe, you can post it in the "German and Austrian Hutmachers" thread.

DoctorJ that hat you are wearing in your avatar, is simply wonderful, where ever did you find such a jewel?

I got it from some crazy guy on eBay. Apparently he didn't know about all the hundred dollar bills under the lining!

I don't get this - I saw one of these in my size go for around $212 a couple of weeks ago. I watched it out of curiosity, but the last thing I would want would be people seeing me in such a thing - I get 'Indy' comments enough when I'm wearing a light-colored Open Road clone and a black jacket. I can't imagine if I put one of these things on.

Aside - went I bought my brown stetson, I was at the register with a "Temple" model. The salesman asked me if I had seen the movie. I put 2 and 2 together and put the hat back, replacing it with a slightly different model with a thinner ribbon. I've since found that I was being extremely naive - almost ANY wide-brimmed fedora signifies Indiana Jones to most people [huh] In any event, when I wore the non-Temple Stetson home, my gf asked me where my bullship was :(

IMHO the best way to deal with this is give them a history lesson on hats. Explain how your hat is different from the one designed for IJ and then continue on about the style IJ was attempting to emulate, and the style your hat is. Follow up with some details on the ribbon of your hat compared to Jones's. Talk about the different types of felt, and get into the fur trade a little bit and by the end of it they will be dazed and confused and never ask you about it again lol. I recommend starting the conversation with "That is really a long interesting story! You see...", then throw in a few "as a matter of fact", and "furthermore". Your friend will by that time wish he had never said anything at all to you. Which is the exact lesson you where hoping to teach in the first place. Then if you really want to confuse them offer them the best of your assistance in the trade. Something along the lines of "I'll be your avuncular into the fine world of hats, if you need help, and trust me my friend I think you do. Just call me Uncle _____. I'll teach you the art of then manly world of hats." If that doesn't get them to pull out their hair, or make them change the subject you may actually have a convert!

On the offset chance that they actually are interested, feel happy that you have converted another person to the fedora look. :D

I'd only use this tactic around people you actually want to hang around though. If it's just some pain in the back on the street a quick one liner will usually work.

Listed only under hat boxes, the wife wanted this Knox box, not necessarily the mystery hat contained within. But she figured for another 10 bucks, it'd be a pinata.

It arrived today and the hat turns out to be a light gray Stetson Mode Edge in unworn condition, a perfect sweatband and with all the tags. One of the appears to say the hat was made in 08/45. 5 1/4" crown and 2 3/4" brim. Unfortunately it's really a Size 7, but is sufficiently supple to stretch to a larger size.

I get this all the time & I don't have anything that closely resembles a HJ fedora. Being in the deep South, I always say this is the style of hat Hank Williams SENIOR wore & Indiana Jones wished he had a hat with as much style! (Not intended to start a flame war with you COW folks)

One advantage to geezerhood is the sheer distance between me and the turnip truck.

I rarely get an Indiana Jones comment, but when I do I inform my interlocutor that I was wearing fedoras when Steven Spielberg was kicking crap out of his cradle. ;)

Adam

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150335301019#description

Went ahead last night and bought this Adam on the $100 "Buy-it-now" price (plus $15 shipping). Looks like the hat is in good shape. From the research I had done and from lessons learned on previous auctions, it seemed to me this hat would go for at least that much. Also, the minimum bid was $49.99. Seemed to me that someone was going to snag it for $100, and I've wanted a vintage brown hat for a while. [huh]

Thoughts?

BTW, the seller says that is dust on the crown. No damage.

I was the one that asked about the lightness on the crest of the crown - but wasn't ready to go for the hat at $100. Hope it meets your expectations. And yes, the bidding probably would have eventually gotten that high anyway

Enjoy it - and let's see photos when the hat arrives.
