Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

Others have given you great advice — spend some time wandering around this forum — you’ll learn a lot and become more confident in identifying what you want to acquire. One thing to be careful about concerning eBay and Etsy: don’t assume the seller is accurately describing the hat when it comes to the era and model. Lots of Stetsons are erroneously listed as “Whippets.” And I’ve seen many fedoras listed as 40’s or 50’s that are obviously from the 1960’s or later. Some supposed “vintage” 1950’s have tags inside with bar codes.

Too true. I lost count of the hats advertised as being from the 1940s or ‘50s that were actually from the 1970s or ‘80s. Don’t believe “...my grandfather owned it and he died in 1956 so I’m sure it’s from the...” Or the 1970s Resistol 3X that is “pure beaver fur.”

I have the same feeling when I see European hats dated, with much audacity, in the 20s or 30s as if the upheaval of a total war that has passed through all countries was non-existent. The Italian market for used hats is very frugal in making available hats really datable before the Second World War and this applies to all the brands: Borsalino, Barbisio, Panizza, Albertini, Vanzina and the rest of small producers. Few I have found and the elements to understand are there and sometimes they can be confusing, also because the producers of Italian hats have been among the last ones to adapt to the standards of the modern classification of hats. This is why I find it difficult to date hats that evidently are not from that era, but that "necessarily" must be

Just bought this one on eBay. I am hoping a week on a custom band block will make it wearable for me, because it is a 7 1/8. I couldn't pass it up.

If anyone wants to trade me for it, I am wide open. It would have to be today, before the seller sends it to my brother-in-law Juan Carlos in Texas, though. I can't very well ask him to ship my hats, as well as receiving them, storing them in his home, and then bring them to me.

This Caxton looks to be in excellent condition.

On second thought, I think I will just keep it. After a couple of weeks on a band block, several 7 1/8 hats from the last batch fit me perfectly, and this Caxton probably will as well.
One I was worried about was this 7 1/8 Knox Forty, but I just tried it on, and it fits great. I will post head pics once I steam it later today.

I saw that one, too. Three inch brim. Good score.
