I think one can be both a collector and a "wearer". I collect/build/restore vintage mountain bikes. This I have knowledge of that I don't have about vintage hats. My rule about collecting bikes is I will not allow any of them to become "garage queens" that only adorn my garage walls....they must be ridden in the manner intended when they were designed and built. If they are not ridden for a whole season then they must be sold to someone who will use them. Not to say I take the rare ones out and ride them hard....some are sunny Sunday afternoon riders but ridden nonetheless. I think hats can be like that too. Collect them, restore them, care for them, AND wear them.
I am both ... absolutely

I am a wearer first

but there are some hats I wear more lightly than others because of the condition I found them in ... I would like to preserve that condition as much as possible

I have no problem at all with collectors or collector-wearers. Collectors who bid up the price of a rare hat are the true preservationists. A high value hat is loved, studied, cared for and passed down to the next generation, a low value hat is liable to be worn hard and worn out, only to be replaced by another and forgotten. I don't have the budget for an $800 hat, but I'm still pretty excited to see one go for that much. We're on to something here, with our passion for vintage quality, believe me. :)

DO NOT BUY FROM THAT SELLER

he sends you hats that look like the photo above

he will also send you private messages cursing you out and calling you all sorts of names if you question it

stay away ... you have been warned

thank you for the reminder Tonio

Yer correct Allen but I could have sworn I saw that hat listed abt a week or 10 days ago at a lower price...
That was a different hat , Bob. Same color combo but without a liner. It sold for quite a sum and then the next day this guy listed this hat. I thought maybe it was the same hat with a liner from a newer hat installed but it's not.

That Dobbs sold not long ago for much less, I don't remember how much. This seller put it right up with this hair-brained price. I'm sure it is the same hat. I would beware of this seller as well. I'll snipe it for $800 at the end so I can emulate Moon!

I stand corrected Gentlemen! This is the same hat! This guy bought it and is now trying to resell it with a liner from a newer hat.
