Dying (and burying) the old-fashioned way

I suppose this would qualify as Golden Era. When my Dad was in Korea he used to go by this one hill practically every day and sitting on top of the hill was a well-dressed old man. Coming and going my Dad would see him but he would never respond when you waved to him. It turned out that the old man was dead and as part of Korean burial custom the deceased is apparenly propped up outside of the grave for a few days to give them one last look at the world before burial. :p

A lot of interesting traditions, here. I've only attended a couple funerals, all pretty much what you'd expect. Sad that two of them had to be for dear friends of my own age. Somehow, death seems more sad when the person is young.

As for being prepared. I do not have a will. 23 is pretty young to be thinking about that. If something does happen to me, my folks will get a life insurance payout on me of 68,000 dollars. That should take care of things.

I guess that 68,000 will more than cover things!

Yes Ma'am, they do. It has something of a niche/cult following these days, but you can find it if you look hard enough.

Tab may be a "territorial" product? I know at one time, Coors Beer was only out west. I have had Tab before, but just do not recall where I was at the time?

You'd be surprised by how quickly that amount would disappear if medical bills are involved. My wife and I each have life insurance policies for $100k, and I'm not convinced that's enough.

I suppose that's possible. Tab sales declined rapidly when Diet Coke was introduced in 1982, so both could account for Tab's lack of visibility in most markets.

Tab sales took a nose dive in the late 70's/early 80's with the cancer hysteria over saccharin. The FDA moved to ban it, and products like Tab were required to use warning labels, even though later research essentially debunked the saccharin/cancer connection. In the mean time, Coca-Cola introduced Diet Coke, which was made with aspartame (NutraSweet), and it quickly took over and pretty much killed Tab. Tab is still available, but it's pretty limited.

The original Tab from the sixties used a combination of saccharin and cyclamates for sweetening, and had a very distinctive metallic flavor even when drunk out of a glass bottle. Cyclamates were banned in 1969 due to their cancer-causing properties, and for a brief period Tab was sweetened with a mix of sugar and saccharin, which greatly improved the taste.

I could never understand the draw of Tab. It was lousy an tasted like the can. Then again people drink beer that tastes like the can now too........

Or it tastes like fruit, or flowers, or candy, or...well, you name it. I don't quite "get" the whole flavored beer and/or flavored coffee trend. Here's an idea--if you don't like the way beer or coffee tastes, don't drink it! I love the blank or confused stare I get from our server when my wife and I are in a restaurant and I ask if they have "coffee flavored" coffee. More often than not I have to explain my question, but once in a while we'll get a server who is a coffee drinker and understands exactly what I'm talking about.

Well, philosophically speaking, we *all* die penniless. As soon as the pulse stops, whatever we think we own ceases to be ours -- what doesn't go to our creditors goes to somebody else, and it all ceases to be our problem.

I've got a few things I want to go to specific people and those people know who they are, but as for the rest of it, hold a big yard sale and pay off what I owe, and if anything's left, use it to buy cat food for the animal shelter.

Like most folks, I just hope that I don't leave any sort of mess behind. Seeing what a friend is dealing with in the wake of his mother's recent passing only sharpens that sense. To the best of my knowledge, I have no terminal conditions, aside from life itself. But tomorrow comes with no guarantee. If I were to shuffle off tonight, well, let's just say there are quite a few loose strings.

So I guess in keeping somewhat on "topic" one could conclude that cans of beer, mixed with a few tab soda pops, riding in a hurst shaped like a V.W. would mean....one is not off just to visit cousin Buford in Miami! lol!

There is sure nothing harder than to lose a loved one. I also think as each of us obtains another year of age, it becomes easier to start thinking about how many years would we really have left, if nothing else comes along to push us into an early departure.

Thankfully, I have good health-insurance, as well. I will likely up my life policy after I get married, though.
