Dyed Vanson Jacket Black

I recently dyed my blue bainbridge Vanson Oxford black using fiebings alcohol based USMC black dye. I first cleaned the jacket using their deglazer then applied the dye. Jacket dyed pretty uniformly and hasn’t bled after the first day. You can see the original color on the inside facings as I decided to leave it blue.

I really liked the original color but it was just too bright and loud for my taste. I feel much more comfortable wearing this jacket in black now.

One piece of advice is to always close the cap tightly between using and don’t dye over concrete. I learned my mistake and finished the project on cardboard over grass.

Looks superb. I can still se very faint blue undertones. Like a true midnight blue. Perfect job! Dye can be quite an adventure. I like Fieblings the best.

Their deglazer won't really remove color, just strips whatever wax and oil are on the surface and opens the pores so the hide is receptive to the dye. If you want to pull out the color, you need to get in there with some acetone. But Isuspect this hide was dyed through, no getting that blue out.

Ton is correct. Leather is dyed completely through with the deglazer only taking away the glossy finish and a very tiny bit of the dye. I believe the deglazer is a diluted acetone mix with some additives in to help prevent the leather from drying too much.

I also dyed a pair of green Benzein’s which came out not nearly as black as the jacket. I only applied 1 coat of dye to both the shoes and jacket. They should show some nice aging with the blue and green showing through.

The benzein’s were a lot brighter green than the first picture portrays.

Love the blue highlights around the zipper, pockets, and seams. Super subtle, but with blue shirts or jeans, it’ll really pop! Love your adventurous spirit!

You got some mad skills. I tried to dye my shoes with natural welt. Now the whole shoe is black. I got no skills with masking tape. That's what I assume was used on both the shoe and jacket. Very clean lines.

Just used cotton balls and q-tips near the welt. I’m too lazy to use painters tape. This was my first time trying to dye anything..guess it’s just beginners luck.

So would you re-wax/oil after drying?

I wouldn’t apply oil as I’d worry it might disturb the dye. Wax for sure. I like URAD as a sort lol f sealant/topcoat.

I use URAD instead of these but ou certainly could.

Urad for a shine, their other product Tenderly produces more of a matte finish. I also use Blackrock to get a waxy CXL look.

I always worry that the dye could qear off with rain or rubbing into other fabrics.
