Duckpin Bowling

I've been trying to get in some duckpin, which is pretty much only in this region, before I leave the area this August for Halifax and lose my opportunity.

Here are some pictures from the old White Oak duckpin lanes, down in the basement of the White Oak shopping center.

Thanks for the pictures, they've sucked me right back to my time stationed in Goose Bay, Labrador; there was a Duckpin (I didn't know it was called duckpin) alley there which at the time was out of service. One of our squadron technicians, who used to maintain a tenpin alley before joining up, managed to get it going again, so we had free games as a reward. It was exactly as in your pictures.

Here in the Northeast, we call it Candlepin Bowling. There is a great bowling alley in the Boston area that was built in 1939, is still in the same family, and has a lot of 50s decor. http://www.saccosbowlhaven.com

Here's a different place- up in Baltimore, the the Patterson Bowling center. It's been there since 1927.

Since I can be outbowled by most six-year olds, I've no idea what "duckpin" means. Please enlighten.

Duckpin is a type of bowling that we have down here in the Maryland region. The balls are small and don't have holes, similar to the ones that they use in candlepin. You get three balls, unlike the two you get in tenpin. The pins are short and fat, and when they get hit, they really fly, like ducks.

It's more difficult than tenpin. No one's ever rolled a perfect game.
