Hi Folks

Where did the term DRESSED TO THE NINES come from?

Someone said to me today, Sir you are always Dressed To The Nines when ever I see you. I know its a compliment however just wondering where the saying originated.

There are several folk etymologies, none of which can be proven. The OED traces 'to the nines' as an expression meaning perfection to 1719.
