Dr Martens are very special round here as they where made in my local town for years until production got switched to the far east.

So important are Dr MArtens to Northampton, our local museum has a section on Dr Martins and include Elton Johns DM's from the film Tommy.

My Martins came in on Wednesday, only a week and a half late. They didn't ship them to the store with the rest of the order...

Anyways, they are currently on my feet, and they are good. Not exactly lace-up-and-wear, because they need a little bit of breaking in time due to the stiffness of the leather, but theye're breaking in very quickly with no special help.

I have a question, how did you people lace up your Docs? I decided to go with Army Style lacing, because of both the stiffness of the leather and the fact that the style is more economical in its use of the laces, so there's more lace sticking out of the top of the boot, so I could knot the ends of the lace and pull all the slack out to get the boots on and off instead of having to unlace and relace the boot every time I put it on. I got tired of that almost before I got the boot, heh.

You need to go with the bow tie style I.E standard lacing you get a nice even pull on the boot.

I don't believe in doing anything exclusively, but of course that is my opinion.

I have two pairs of Docs, one is a light brown I bought in, what?, 1999?. They are beat to shit, frankly, and still comfy as hell. The leather is tearing on the top due to something I did, I think. They feel like slippers when I have them on.

The second pair I bought in 2004. They are a darker brown. They are good boots but for one HUGE (and smelly) problem. They smell. Like I wore them over the summer and never dried them properly. It's bad. Or was bad, I have not worn them in a while. They are comfy, but the smell was a reason not to wear them. Believe me, I have tried everything to get them NOT to smell. No luck.

About Dr Martens For Life, I have a pair of the 8-holers in brown and they're worth the extra over the bog standard 1460s- heavier, harder wearing soles and gorgeous soft waxy leather- comfy straight out of the box, and still comfy after pavement-pounding all day. They come with spare laces and a tub of wax which you're meant to rub into them every now and then- definitely built to stay in one piece for a good long while- I've had mine a year and they're holding up very well- I do wonder how destroyed they'd have to be before the factory would send you a new pair though!
