Does anyone own an "Indy" straw from Peters Brothers?

I am hunting for a summer hat with a tall, straight crown and wide brim and I was hoping to get some impressions from those who own the PB Indy straw (or any other custom straw from them).

Specifically, I am curious about its overall weight, "breathability" (airflow), and durability with normal use. Any issues with sizing?
Also, how does it compare to a panama straw (e.g., like a cuenca, or like a montecristi, or like neither)?
Do you find the hat an appropriate match for suits and dressed up attire?

Thanks for the help.

I had one last year & I have another one on order that is due in late April/early May. For the price, it really is not that bad. My only gripe is that I wish they put more stiffener in when they build it.

It is very light, being that is made of straw.

When you order give them the measurements of you head, not a size, such as in my case 23 3/4 inches instead of "part-way between a 7 1/2 & a 7 5/8.

I find that you cannot really compare a Mylan to a Panama. True, they are both straw hats, but they are two seperate beasts. It would be like comparing a baseball to a football, Yes, they are both balls, but they don't share much else in common. What I have found is that Mylan almost always breathes better than a Panama. Whether a Panama breathes depends of its weaves. The tighter the weave, the less likely it is to breath (and the more it will cost.)

One last thing. when measureing you head, it is better to error on the side of too loose than too tight. If you get it too tight & then want it let out, you will lose some width in the brim. Whereas if the hat is too loose, you can put sizing tape behind the sweatband to "shrink" the size down.

My 'Indy Straw' is by Stetson.

All I know is when I placed my order with Peters Brothers a couple of years ago, not
only did they not communicate, they didn't deliver. I wouldn't touch 'em! I think their
involvement with cowboy events in Fort Worth take priority.

Dixon,

Thanks for the input. I assume the Stetson was a stock model and not MTO?

Charlie,

Very helpful info. Thank you.

I would primarily pair mine up with summer suits and dressed-up resort wear. Do you think the straw quality is "refined" enough to match up with that type of attire?

For the money they charge, I would definitely not want to end up with an only-fit-for-yardwork beater straw hat.

I wouldn't try it. Peter Brothers mylan is a very coarse weave. I would stick with a Panama.

I have to agree with Bruce. The Peter Brothers seem a bit casual. Great field hat, though. If you prefer milan over panama, try for something stiffer. Most off-the-rack milans hold their shape stubbornly and are so heavily treated that the coarseness is covered up.

Stop gap decision made

Ok, I am getting a Cuenca panama from Panama Bob for immediate use (and to fulfill my immature need for instant gratification ;) ).

That will give me the breathing room to plan out a budget and a time frame for getting my ideal summer fedora.
