"Doctor Who," He's Back and it's About Time!

I too just watched Blink for the first time last night, and WOW... creepy much. Fantastic Episode, and I love the Doctor's device that goes "ding" when stuff happens.

By the way, any Torchwood fans here? I'm almost through the first season now, and while quite different from Doctor Who, I kind of like it. Like a Doctor Who meets X-Files kinda thing.

I thought season 1 of Torchwood had it's highs and lows, but over all a pretty good series. A couple really dark episodes in there that I thought were refreshing to watch. I've seen interviews with Davis saying that they actually modeled the show off of some American series formats. He actually pitched the show idea before Doctor Who, (called Excalibur originally) but then sort of reinvented it as a Doctor Who spin off after he brought back that series.

I do find myself looking forward to the 2nd series. I've heard that Martha Jones will be in a couple episodes.

Yeah, a few eps haven't been as strong, got 2 left to watch to finish off series 1, but overall I like it pretty well. Just finished series 3 of Doctor Who tonight, which I was glad finally explained some stuff, as I was rather confused how the heck Jack ended up at Torchwood anyhow, and I had just kind of rolled with it assuming it'd be explained at some point.

I can't wait for series 4 to start! Or at least the Christmas special!

Torchwood is quiet enjoyable, although a few times I felt like they used sexual references and swear words more because they can rather than because they help the story.

Lots of Bisexualness going on, so if you are offended by that, I'm giving you a heads up now. But that should be expected by now from Jack

It's definately a bit more gruesome as well, more graphic in the violence and such. It really does remind me alot of X-Files in its heyday of the Monster of the Week type stories, vs the grand conspiracy era.

Yeah, Davies does try to push the bisexual (or gay) aspects as much as he can in these shows. I suppose it shouldn't be a big surprise, from the creator of Queer As Folk. He can certainly push that envelope further in Torchwood than he can in Doctor Who. Personally, I was always a bit offended at those hints in Doctor Who for the fact that it seemed classic Doctor Who steered away from sexual aspects as much as they could in any shape or form. And then all the sudden to have all kinds of sexual tension introduced in the new series, and seemingly play a common thread throughout, it was a bit of a strange turn for a classic series fan.

Surprisingly, even though these aspects are pushed further in Torchwood, it doesn't bother me as much there. Sexual tension for all the characters takes place at some point or another. You have to wonder how any world saving gets done at all because they're so obsessed with sex or confused by their interpersonal relationships. Yet, that just seems more fitting in the Torchwood schema.

Just finished watching Utopia; lots of running again, eh? Derek Jacobi--I didn't expect to see him. John Simm intrigues me, I'll be interested to see how he develops the character. Not the best ep but far from the worst.

The Sound of Drums tonight. I'm torn about John Simms--his performance was a little broad but I'm not sure if that's his fault or the fault of the script. He's a compelling actor though--sort of Kevin Spaceyish. Overall a solid episode though, exciting and it sure did move.

I hated these last three episodes, including the one that is to come. They are just so over the top and so ridiculous. Simms is one of the few things I enjoy about them. I just think it was really a waste of reintroducing the Master in the series.

Well, if you catch a scene towards the end of the last episode, you know there is more to come...

I wasn't terribly impressed with Simms though. I wanted to see far more Derek Jacobi as the Master. I found Simms performance to be rather.... goofy. And the Master shouldn't be goofy. The only way I could let myself appreciate it at all was to think of the fact that the Master had just regenerated and traumatic regeneration does leave a time lord in a bit of a loopy mental state afterwards. But then again, 1 year later, he was just as goofy. So, so much for that theory.


I have the first two episodes of The Sarah Jane adventures to watch. I know it's geared more towards kids, but Im so hungry for new Doctor Who that it will tide me over till Torchwood starts, which in turn will tide me over until Who starts again.

Yes, I know what you mean! I felt like they were aiming for arch villiany and missing. He needs to be more threatening. I lean towards thinking the actor is capable of it if he had a better script, but I haven't seen the later episodes yet. I thought his chemistry with his randy wife Lucy was mildly funny though. Did you like Delgado or Ainsley?

The music during the release of the Toclafane was just plain dumb; in my opinion villians should not instigate music.

I always enjoy hearing The Doctor reminisce about his past. Overall, I continue to really like Tennant's Doctor.

Delgado had a real creepy menacing aura about him that probably has never been matched again, but I have a real fondness for Anthony Ainsley's incarnation of the Master. He was the kind of villain you loved to hate. I've heard that he was forced to play the character more "campy" than he always wanted (like with the maniacal laugh) but in the final episode of the classic series, Survival, he was finally able to play him more the way he always wanted.

I also love those little references to his (The Doctor) past too, which you know are just little bones thrown in for the classic series fans. I know that I am very happy with the fact that every season sees the return of at least one classic series enemy or alien.

I will embarrassingly admit that I haven't watched the doctor since I was a wee one. But, Hem has sucked me in, and I'm really enjoying it. I must say, even though I don't know much about the series, I really am enjoying watching David Tennant. He just has a flair about him, he brings a brightness and power to the show. Again, I don't know how he compares to others since I don't really know anything about the show, but the episodes I have watched that he is in, I've truly enjoyed. I'm playing catch up now, borrowing all the episodes that Hem has, so I guess I will report back later with a more in depth response. But for now, I'll say I'm really enjoying the new Dr. Who

Ainsley was the first I saw in the role so I have a soft spot for him too.

Survival--ah, the Cheetah People! I should dig out some of the better McCoys, I've been thinking about them lately.

Apparently the trend of introducing new classic villains will be continuing through the next series as well.

I'm just bummed now cause I'm all caught up on Torchwood and Doctor Who, so I have quite the wait till new stuff. I'm just trying to catch the occasional Torchwood ep on HDNET so I can watch it in HD

As far as Jack goes, I like him quite a bit better on Torchwood than on Who now. He's the type of character that is just too strong of a character to be a supporting role now.

I agree Daisy, he's got so much energy and I like it that he plays The Doctor as being pretty close to the edge of madness at times. Watching the shows I also believe Tennant's Doctor has a long past, which I haven't really felt with some of the other actors who've played the role. I think Tennant's quite a gifted actor.

There are a couple of Mccoy episodes I'd like to track down again too. Ghostlight being one, that was a great episode. I also am quite fond of that psychic circus storyline. Remember that Pith helmut wearing englishman and his werewolf companion? Wouldn't you have loved to see the adventures those two went on?

The Greatest Show in the Galaxy--yeah, I wonder what those two got up to?

Ghostlight is in my top three for the whole series. That was the only episode that writer did for the TV series wasn't it? Pity, it was quite strong. I've got that one on VHS; it'd be worth my while to upgrade if the DVD is still available.
