Having read Bill Bryson's 'The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid' where he talks about both his parents working for The Des Moines Register makes me feel like I am losing a personal friend! If you haven't read it, it's a great book about being a kid in 1950s America.

Bill Bryson is wicked delightful. Lived in the UK for a while, too. His "Fat Girls in Des Moines" essay is wonderful.

Let's say the worst comes to pass, and it's each person for him or herself. Do you think your existing neighbors and you would help one another?

Even if everyone is out for him or herself, co-operating can be a good strategy. E.g., you can borrow my shovel and I can borrow your saw. Most people would figure you can get farther ahead by co-operating.

After Hurricanes around here I have been really surprised at how much my neighbors worked together. Guys who I would never expect to pitch in were helping me clear downed trees in other people's yards. Sometimes one person starting a positive action will get others to join in.

On the other hand,
I would still not let them see into in my storage areas.
