Well.........

I'm new at this, and am only interested in single copies of two or three styles and in sizes that will fit me. That is to say, I want only a small variety of hats to wear, not to collect. So, I must admit to the ocassional smallness of mind that allows frustration when seeing the very few hats in my 7 1/2 - 7/58 size announced as, "my15th Stratoliner", or "couldn't pass up an additional Open Road, even though I know it won't fit me".

Now with that bit of pettiness off my chest -- I really enjoy seeing the different collections and treatments of hats by the members of the Lounge. And the willingness to share the wealth of knowledge, as well as the spirit of mutual appreciation make this a neat place.

Now, back to the penny-pinching search o yes, that's probably the root of the problem).

Like many here...I snipe. With a three-year old on the scene, I have had to curb some of my discretionary spending and as my wife will sometimes remind me, I can't possibly wear all twenty-four hats at once!

That being said, I try not to get upset when I get outbid. Generally, my bid will reflect what I think the hat is worth to me. I find that I am getting more frugal as time goes by...patience does pay off and I have gotten my best hats and my best buys from classifieds here on the Lounge and by scouring antique malls.

On the other hand, competition is what it is and losing is rarely fun. The sting is lessened a bit when I find that I have been outbid by a fellow lounger. Knowing that the hat will be appreciated and well cared for is better than having it go to someone who wants to complete their "Huggy Bear" outfit in time for Halloween.

Argh, I am sooo frustrated. I think it's time to find a sniper! I have been outbid one too many times, and lost many a great dresses and suits. My problem isn't really that I don't have a fast connection. It just seems that prices are going through the roof on ebay. I have seen dresses from the thirties that are $29.00 in the last minute of the auction. I'll put in a bid with a few seconds left of an amount way over budget, but just to be on the safe side, usually around $250. This used to work great, and I'd end up winning the dress for around $40. Now I do this, and I still get outbid by some person who's willing to pay $400 for a dress that really isn't even worth the $250 bid I put in. So, I'm not that frustrated with getting outbid by snipers. I'm more frustrated with people coming in an putting in astronomical prices. Hmmm, I just realized, that was my strategy
But really, as I have griped about in other threads here, the prices for woman's clothing on ebay is getting out of control. It's making it very difficult for me to acquire anything new
So, even if I do get my bid in at the last minute. Often times, the item is just too expensive, and I get outbid anyway. I don't know if using a sniper would help this situation. For my max bid never seems to be high enough, and I thought it was usually pretty darn high:rage:

Yeah, I figure ah well too, I figure I just saved myself a lot of money on something that might not even be described properly, and the seller might have been a nut case. Thinking negative thoughts always cheers me up Who are these people dropping four bills for day dresses. I don't even want to talk about the astronomical prices of evening gowns!

Call me a weirdo, but...

... I don't get too angry if I get outbid. Though I will confess, I often watch auctions and am upset when I see a hat (that I did not bid on) that goes for, IMHO, too LOW a bid. Deep down I feel as though the hat is not getting the respect it deserves! I like to watch auctions dwindle down to the last few seconds and see who does what. It is kinda like watching a horse race, I guess. [huh]

I think that in the end, those sniper programs have the benefit of cutting down on bidding wars and keeping the prices from getting out of hand. There's no time, with 7 seconds left to go, for someone to raise his max bid in reaction to mine.

That having been said, I tend to make my top bid high enough that if someone outbids me, I feel no regrets. Or, sometimes I'll bid lower and say to myself, "If that hat goes for less than X, I want to be the one who gets it."

Like Dixon I have lost a couple of bids while here on the lounge or by being distracted but I can't really be upset at others for that. There are only a few hats that haunt me because I know that type won't be available again for a long time.
I have very specific requirements and though at times even to my wife it seems that I am bidding on everything I am really not. Sometimes I think that people who don't know what they want or don't know if a hat is good or not will look for the number of bidders and if there are many than it must be good and so they bid. My usual first bid is what I am willing to pay and depending on priorities I will persue it at a higher bid and sometimes I will throw a hook out and see if I catch some thing good by chance.
For me this is a competion and letting your guard down will cost you your item,although It bothers men less if someone from the Lounge beats me out. At least I will be able to see it and learn more .

I missed an Open Road style the other day because of a soccer game - $1 over mine. I hate soccer! !

Tag sales are rare and never around here, so the new strategy is to scour Goodwill and the Hospice charity store. Maybe the Salvation Army. But I feel like a heel going there knowing others are there out of need, and I'm just looking to score a Whippet.

Somebody told me to simply determine your maximum price, bid it, and see what happens. My maximum price gets beat so much I haven't placed a bid on a hat in six or seven months. I check "buy-it-now" a lot. Can't always take getting outbid. It hurts. I know it's not personal. Loungers with greater resources will win. It's business. Still hurts, though.

There are two reasons why I will, on rare occasion, buy more than
one of a particular style of hat.

- It makes me nervous to wear an irreplaceable hat. Since you
can no longer go to a store to buy a 1940 Stetson, I'd like to have
a backup for a favorite. So when they come up, I jump on them.

- I like to have more than one flavor of a favorite style.
For example, I have Open Road hats from Resistol,
Stetson, Dobbs, Cavanagh... They are all
different and I like both the stylistic difference and
the ability to wear an Open Road style hat with a wide range
of outfits, thanks to the range of colors, styles, crown heights and
brim widths I have. Same goes for fedoras.

But really, I can quit any time.

I haven't bid lately, but learned that it was best to bid for it by putting in the highest price I was willing to pay. Then, if someone caught up to me and passed me, or sniped at the last minute, I was not too bummed out.

Most of the time, I gave away or sold the hats I won on ebay because they did not meet my expectations and/or I did not look good in them. I did get a wonderful black Open Road restyled in classic fedora. Also a silverbelly that I had restyled. I love the black one almost as much as my custom hats.

In recent months, I have acquired fedoras from both Art and Steve and now have every color and all the quality I could want, so do not bid.

Have had better luck with cowboy hats, including a silvermist Tom Mix hat.

that is very good advice Dean. determine your real maximum on an item and bid it. If someone beats you, then you know you gave it your best shot, and it won't hurt so much.

When people complain about being beaten by one or two bucks what it says to me is that they didn't bid their true maximum.

When I'm deciding my bid, whatever sum I first come up with I try to imagine my reaction at being beaten by a few bucks. Initial reaction is usally "yes, i would have paid that".... I keep it up until I reach a sum that I know I wouldn't go beyond.

There are other sources if you look into it. Garage sales, rummage sales, and flea markets happen all the time in even the most remote areas of Ohio, like here for instance. lol
I just checked the yellow pages under thrift stores, and I found several that are a little farther afield, but near a few shops I already frequent.
So off I go today in search of the elusive holy grail of fedoras, whatever that turns out to be.
I'll keep my eyes peeled for items that may be appreciated by others here too.
And really, there's no need to feel like a heal when you are simply shopping for a bargain or two. I have found a few great deals on brand new items, and any purchase does benefit the charity organization that runs the store so nobody really loses.

I too was outbid on that same hat. No need to get angry. It's only when you realize that you lost the item by 50 cents or $1.00. But then, you don't really know what another bidders high bid was. There have been many good points brought up in this thread, to which I must agree. I think that placing a bid with a price you feel comfortable paying for that particular item seems right. If time is available then perhaps watch it and snipe at the end, again with a price you feel is the highest price your willing to pay for the item. It seems foolish to place a bid every day that is 50 Cents or $1.00 higher than the highest bidder, that usually only drives up the price. Anyway, it's quite interesting to search for the unusual hat and to actually see who wins. (If it's a lounge member or not). Just my opinion.lol

That's what I do, but I snipe when I do it. I know what I'm willing to pay, but if you put in your max bid early in the game, someone out there will decide, "well, I think I really want that hat," and will up their bid, usually a dollar at a time until they beat you. For that reason I can't get mad at anyone who is willing to pay more than me, and I don't mind getting sniped either. I just don't want to give them time to think about it. The only person I get mad at is myself when I forget about an auction and the thing goes for some ridiculously low price. I try to be zen about it, though. Honestly, do I really need another hat? Do I really need anything from e-bay?

If I am outbid I may say "drat!" but sure don't dwell on it. There'll always be another of whatever item it is you just lost anyway. I always have a maximum amount I decide an item is worth and don't go over. I watched some vintage auto paraphenalia go for $36 when I paid $15 for the same item. I had to laugh and say, "suckers!"
