Disappearing Quonset Huts

An iconic symbol of WWII in the Pacific continues its ride into the sunset. It is sort of sad, even if it is inevitable. I’m certain that I entered a Quonset hut or two in my day; I’m equally certain that I took the experience for granted at the time. No doubt, due to their extremely cheap construction cost, we will continue to see them in period movies.

There was a Quonset hut behind the main Engineering Building here at Vanderbilt until the latter '60's. Mechanical drawing was taught there until just before I arrived as a freshman. It was then used for office space.
It was removed during a campus renovation in the '70's.

There are still a few around here. The "triple" was a bar back around 1980 called the "Hanger".

This pair is for the same restaurant (great chili!) that has been around since 1909. They have been in the current Quonset hut location since 1985 (they were forced to move from the older location).

There are still a few of the small ones around here, but most are gone. One of the companies that made them was fairly close to here and they made larger ones for machinery and grain storage long after Uncle Sam quit buying. Even those are becoming a rarer sight every year.

Really great photos, Bob. Thanks.
It is actually kind of amazing that the army is still using these. Definitely ghosts from the WWII era. (Speaking as a one time soldier who once lived in the barracks, I'm also imagining the huge Hawaiian cockroaches that must infest those old huts.)

There are many Quonset huts dotting the landscape in Ontario, mainly in farm country. In Victoria, British Columbia, there is the (now named) Blue Bridge at the Roxy Theatre (formerly and simply the Roxy Theatre - once a film theatre, now a mix of both films and live theatre). It opened as the Fox in 1949 in a converted Quonset hut, having a mixed history over the years (for a time in the 70s it was the local porn palace!). My wife and I enjoyed its kitschy atmosphere and cheap prices (2005 - 2008).

Owned for over twenty years by one Howie Seigel, it was known when we were there as the local "cinegogue":
