I ordered a jacket from Canada that was 850 ish.

My tariff charge was almost 50 percent by the time the broker fees were added.

That hurt.

Hi. You purchased a jacket from a Canadian business. The purchase price and “declared value” of the jacket entered on the shipping form was $850, so you ended up paying approximately $1200 due to imposed tariffs?

$799, (less than the De Minimis for Canada’s country-specific tariff threshold) you would have still paid a tax, but tariff would have been zero?
it definitely makes you think twice whether to buy out of the country, which is very unfortunate.
Yes, and it’s important to keep track of the De Minimis (minimum tariff threshold) for each country.

The jacket was $1,026 with taxes and shipping. Then I got charged an additional $376.05 in tariffs and fees.

850 jacket cost me just over 1400 in my hand.

How awful, I am sorry that you have experienced this! Now I’m wondering what happens with Ebay auctions where the seller is shipping from China. If buyer is shown the real cost including the 57% tariffs specific to China plus the 10% tax plus shipping when making the purchase? … or if the buyer has an option to rescind the deal before it is shipped?

There was no mention from eBay or the seller regarding the beating I was going to take.

UPS messaged me of the additional charges AFTER the jacket cleared customs. Pay it. Or you don’t get your purchase.

I don’t even have it yet. What if the jacket is trash? How do you send it back?

In all fairness, nothing about the system has changed. There’s always been (local, regional, state, federal) taxes and there’s always been tariffs and customs fees.
And they have always been added after the purchase has crossed the customs border.

The only thing that’s changed is the extent of the upcharge.

Very frustrating to have small businesses and even private purchases be affected by what is essentially a political extortion.

Then again: just another case of be careful at the ballot box.

Regardless of whether something is bought on eBay or anywhere else it is always the responsibility of the buyer to be aware of any local taxes, duties or tariffs which may be applied to the purchases they make.

The seller or method of transaction (in this case eBay) cannot be expected to know of any extra payments which may become due and then bring this to the attention of a buyer as these will vary from state to state, province to province and country to country.
And in the case of tariffs in the US it seems that these are changing on an almost hourly basis. One minute they are being applied on an ad hoc basis only for them to then be rescinded or amended soon afterwards when their actual impact is realised.

It's a strange business decision for DHL to completely cut off a whole segment of their market.
DHL has said they are temporarily suspending picking up shipments, so I assume once the nightmare is sorted out they will start taking shipments again.

The tariffs are reciprocating. These countries have charged them to US companies for a long time. Doesn't make it any fun. Our European friends are used to this. I paid $96 to import an Aero jacket in March. I've got a cheaper Simmons Bilt on the way. Still over the $800 so we'll see. The deal with UK is 10% I believe.

They were based on the trade deficit, not reciprocating a specific tariff. But yes, other countries do have tariffs on the US.

I think it’s anyone’s guess as to how the recent US tariffs were arrived at, because remote barren islands inhabited only by penguins and seals were also included.

This entire thread has been political for an entire week now. Why is this allowed to keep going like this?

I appreciate being informed of Lounger's tariff experiences, but it would be done better without the political opinionating.

I believe it's important to note that on 02 May there will be a new $100 charge per package on all purchases from Chinese internet sites (not sure if that includes things like Chinese eBay dealers). So even if a shipper declares a package to be worth only $10, it could still cost something like $114.50 in custom fees (10 x 145% + 100).

That's my understanding, but maybe someone has better knowledge. No idea how that woukd even work, so maybe it's just $100 on every package coming from China?

I'm not stating a political opinion, just trying to help folks stay informed.

I am personally not even searching eBay internationally anymore, and have decided not to purchase from Chinese manufacturers at this time.
