Others might have written "He came in. And he wore a brown suit. And the jacket was too small. But the trousers were too large."

Chandler writes:

He wore a brown suit of which the coat was too small for his shoulders and his trousers were probably a little tight under the armpits.

But even where he doesn't joke at all, his descriptions are just excellent. He had an eye for those details that make the picture, while other writers just listed details that made lists of details.
