Deck Jacket Advice request

Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice/suggestions. I'm keen to get a deck Jacket or something similar. I'm generally a size S (35"/90cm Chest, around 17"/44cm on the shoulder).
Many jackets are made too bulky for me.

Am keen on:
- Genuine Wool/Alpaca lining, not Synthetic
- Strong, Durable, thick outer layer for windproofing.
- Close fit but still with room for some movement
- As warm as possible.
Historical accuracy is not especially important, Just looking for the jacket that best does the job.

Here in Australia it's quite difficult to try out any of these jackets in person. The only one I have tried is the Pike Brothers one, which was great but I've written to them and been told they will only be doing the Waxed Cotton version from here on which seems a lot of extra money for a finish I don't want as much. And not in the colours I'd prefer (faded black or Navy)

Does the waxed cotton "break in" after a while?

Something like a Carharrt Detroit Jacket would actually do me very well if I could line it with woolen sherpa.

Any suggestions or tips are welcomed, especially for brands that make smaller sizes. Sick of fighting the cold with Synthetics!

I own a Pike Bros N1 and LOVE it. I would look there if I were you. They do offer a waxed version but the alpaca is super fat and I suspect you would absolutely bake in it were it waxed.

Thanks. I was hoping to get the NON Waxed version. But they are now only doing the non waxed in Khaki - a colour I'm not so fond of. Also I learned from them it is sheep wool, not Alpaca. Still very warm but not as high warmth to weight ratio. I am now regretting not biting the bullet before!

Have you looked at the Carhartt Sheffield jacket? Non waxed, range of colours.

I won't wear mine if temps are above 35 degrees Fahrenheit...I run hot but the thing is an absolute sweat box!

Also I learned from them it is sheep wool, not Alpaca

Interesting, mine is an older Khaki w/brown alpaca...it is super warm and somewhat irritating on bare skin.

You might consider an A-2 deck jacket (permeable). I have an original one from 1966, and it is a warm jacket with wool lining. The one pictured here is on ETSY for $145.00. They are also sometimes available in the local Army/Navy surplus stores in the US. Not sure about availability Down Under.

As others have said, it is a warm jacket. Don't know when you would be able to wear it in your country, though.

The pike Bros or an ebay true vintage are on my radar for next winter...love the A-2.

Regarding the waxed cotton:

One wash in warm or hot water and that waxed finish is gone but I'd worry about the wool lining. A light tumble on cool for 30 min in the dryer then lay flat to dry?

Depends where you live. In the southern parts we do have snow and rain too.

I probably wouldn't wear one in Melbourne where our winters average 47f degrees. I find a tweed jacket is enough.

Yes where I live it's up to 48/117 in summer and down to 15/6 or 7 below Zero in winter. And I feel the cold!

I did own one yes. Great cut but not warm enough. The lower weight on the outer (9.5 ounce compared to 12 ounce on the detroit) is really noticeable. Also no wool on the inside, though a nice lining to the touch.

According to who I asked at Pike Brothers that company NEVER used Alpaca but they might have been wrong. I do feel the cold and find if it's natural like wool I can be warmer than I need to be without being uncomfortable.

Yeah I do keep en eye out for them too though the ones I'v com across are usually not so thick on the outer so I find the wind gets through. If it's cold enough to snow that's cold enough for me!

I also have a Real McCoy's N1 - terrific quality, slimmer fit. Pike Bros are more generously cut. Buzz Rickson is the other brand to consider. Though I did notice Levis are doing a nice N1 in blue - certainly a much cheaper option.
