I think I get it, but how do you / she define the difference? You like most things from the period, whereas, she is more select and likes only those things that have come define the best of a particular class of items, cars, clothes, architecture, movies, books, etc.?

I would say it is not being into fashion trends for my wife. She does have some vintage stuff, mainlythings like handbags, and jewelery. She has tended to things that are timeless in style and of high quality. She is not a throw away type of person. For me it is both. Classic styles as well as vintage clothing in the way of suits and hats. At the end of the day though it is a grey area whe it comes to definition.

I'm a Pablo Neruda fan ( Chilean poet). Life and relationships are a series of ADVENTURES, he opined. His book , 24 love songs one of despair, are the finest Ive read. In Spanish, yet, and beautiful.
EACH relationship is a complete circle with a beginning and an end. Do not bemoan the end, rather revel in what times you had. Accept and appreciate the experience.

Hold your head up, accept the completion of the adventure, smile with appreciation of what you have experienced, be grateful, not bitter, and welcome the new one.

Some of my very beat "Adventures " lasted only 6 months. But they were the best times in my life. Others lasted longer and also were wonderful.
Feast upon each Adventure hole you are in it. But remember: Adventures, by nature require both effort and sacrifice.
If you can manage to embrace the concept, you will find happiness.

My Mrs is not into the 'Vintage' look at all though she likes my hats and some leather coats/jackets I have always wore. She has tried to change me and gets extremely frustrated that her efforts amount to virtually nothing. I even say to her "I would never try to change you, I love you just as you are whatever you wear". Sometimes I think even this goes in one ear and out of the other.
But we get along just fine and enjoy each others company and that is the main thing, and I find among those that like old things that we are not alone in our ways of living our lives and that goes for both men and women.

She'd probably be unhappy if you changed. Altering your cool wardrobe is way too minor an issue to count in your favor and I've noticed many times that when the husband gives in, gets him either 1) nothing or 2) silent disrespect for caving in. Wear those hats proudly as you always have!

Ugh. Couples.

Kinda had the same thought. If your relationship has that level of game playing - ugh. Life is hard as there's so much game-playing in it that, IMHO, your relationship should be an oasis from that world.

My girlfriend will ask me the stand-up-comedian standard, do these pants make my butt look big question and she darn well expects a real answer which I give but with tact. Neither one of us would want it any other way.

How times have changed. Shopping with my then-19 year old daughter, she tried on some jeans and asked "do these make my butt look big?" I said, "well. yes. They kinda do."

She: "Oh, we'll be buying these!"

Living in a city in which wearing socks is considered formal, I see no future in dating a woman anything like myself.

Now that I look back on it, it's interesting that many of us grew up in times where the culture and style changed very rapidly. Significant changes every five to ten years. If I remember correctly, Portland has been that way for 25 years or so and I'm guessing other places are getting static in similar ways as well. We need something to mix things up ... I realize I may regret saying that!

You would have been noticeably dated wearing an early '30s men's suit in the mid-'60s, but only in a "the details are off" sort of way. The basic high-level construct of a man's suit, tie, shirt, shoes, etc., was pretty constant for over thirty-five years - then all heck broke lose. My grandfather was very poor and wore his 1930s clothes into the '60s and, while they were a bit "off" (lapels, cuts, patterns), they still fit the basic construct of men's clothes until the late-'60s blew the doors off that truck.

At a Wisconsin wedding I attended in 1990 I chatted with a relative I hadn't met before (or if I had met him before, I had no real recollection of it) -- an old farmer from up by Rochester, Minnesota, who was wearing what I suspect was the only suit he owned, which I guessed dated from the 1940s. He had few teeth and was missing parts of fingers, but he still fit into the suit that fit him when he was nearly 50 years younger.

He'd be gone by now. I bet he was buried in that suit.

If I had to buy clothes every season (or every year) I don't think I'd survive the stress. And I don't particularly *mind* shopping, but I have four people to clothe in this house and I'm not making it any more complicated than it needs to be.

As far as the pants and butt question, I short circuited that by getting rid of all but two pairs; the dressier of which I use to mow the lawn.

My husband gained half the weight I gained during my last pregnancy, and unlike me, he didn't lose it. He knows better than to comment anything but niceties on my lawn mowing pants or anything I wear. He sleeps rather soundly; I've told him so.

Wife and I have bounced between victorian styles to mid-century and have now settled in the 30's/40's. We met 30+ years ago at a polka party. I was the only guy that could polka.

I am frequently surprised, or at the least find myself regularly pausing to just enjoy the fact that my wife actually appreciates me for who I am and what my interests are, more than that I find that many of our interests do overlap. After years of other relationships (girlfriends, friends, and even family) where I was constantly reminded that I would never being good enough, being told to change, or being liked for what I was not (yet not for what I was...) this change of pace is such a joy. I am still surprised to find that she grows ever more comfortable with my tastes and interests and likewise I do hers. I always take the time to thank her, and point out just how wonderful it is to be appreciated. And that is not to say that all of our interests are identical. While I can watch just about any western her tolerance is a bit lower, and likewise if it is a film that has dancing in it my wife'll watch it (maybe 10 times) but I hold out for the dance films that I'm told I have to watch.

I've often thought that it would be nice to meet a man that enjoys vintage, antiques, and digging around at flea markets and thrift stores like I do... but then I realize that if he's collected as much stuff as I have, there's going to be a storage problem!
