I want to go with somewhat vintage for a cruise I have coming up. It will be on Carnival to the bahamas. Can anyone give me a few ideas on what to wear and bring. There will be one formal night and one semi formal. I almost never wear pants or shorts.

I have an article from the late 1930s on packing for a cruise, but I think it mostly has 'new' sorts of clothing that they recommend. I will find it and scan incase it is helpful.

Otherwise, I'm imagining it will be nice and warm, so linen dresses or skirts with halter tops, sandals, a big straw sunhat for day and at least one long formal gown and either a cocktail dress or a long summer evening gown in something like cotton organdy.

I've seen women who wear vintage sporting sailor dress while on a boat.

Also there are a few movies where the actress(s) are on cruise ships. Here are some youtube clips.
1. Love Affair (1939)

2. An Affair to Remember (1957) this is a remake of the 1939 movie Love Affair.

I OWN AN awesome vintage sailor dress. Linen dresses deffinitely, I need to find a great evening dress. I have a couple princess type dresses that may go also. I am planning two outfits each day. Two bathing suits, my vintage lounge dress, one formal dress and one semi formal. This is our big dream to do a trip together so we will deffinitely have a blast.

General wear - Navy Blazer (or possibly a striped boating blazer.... there are of course those who would argue the latter suited only to yachting rathen than an ocean cruise...), white shirts, white flannels.

Semi-formal - black tie; this time of year and on a cruise in the tropics espcially I would suggest an ivory / off-white dj

Formal - white tie.

At least for vintage - chances are you'll find that in the modern era "semi-formal" will mean lounge suit and "formal" black tie, so it may depend how comfortable you are with sticking out... :)
Umm......for women????? :p

@moonmatrix: I envy you. Looking forward to pics when you are back.

Oops, apologies..... my mistake. This cropped up in the "New posts" section (I don't often go straight to the forum 'rooms' themselves) - I misread its true location.

I've never been on a cruise, but I have lived on a ship. I'd think about layers- when you are in the sun it is hotter than hot, and when you're in the shade and there's a breeze, it can be quite cool. I'd think skirts/ blouses, dresses, and maybe a shawl or light sweater that you can put in your bag. I'd guess the inside of the ship is probably air conditioned to death, the outside will be scorching and possibly windy/ cool.

Sunglasses, a wide brimmed hat, and sunscreen are going to be absolutely necessary. With the hats, make sure they are very secure on your head. For a wide brimmed hat, I'd recommend it tie around your chin to keep from blowing away. Ships are famous for being dead still and then there's an air gust. Maybe cruise ships manage this better (I worked on a 125 foot sailboat), but better safe than sorry.

I managed to find and scan the article I mentioned above - 'Judgement for the Cruise' from The Ideal Home April 1938. This is a British magazine, so I imagine they are mostly thinking of crossing the Atlantic with their advice. Some for both women and men here.

On the opposite page there is an ad for a brochure 'What to wear for Cruising and Travel' by Lillywhites, that says 'Write, 'phone or call for this folder containing illustrated descriptions of new and exclusive sports clothing and footwear for cruising and travel. Post Free On Request.' How I'd like to see that! Lillywhites is still in the same place, Piccadilly Circus in London.

There's an absolutely brilliant episode of 'Poirot' set at a hotel on Rhodes and the clothes are just lovely, very like cruisewear. I really can't remember the name of the episode I'm afraid but it was one of the more recent ones.

Found it! It's called 'Triangle at Rhodes', 'Murder in Mesopotamia' also has some lovely holiday attire.
