I despise this type of pricing because

1. That jacket is awesome and I’d love to own one.
2. I can’t rationalise spending that much money on a jacket I would get to wear maybe 4 times a year.

There are plenty of nice shinny things a guy like me on an average wage can’t afford that I’m perfectly ok with.

However, not that many years ago this weird hobby/obsession used to be at the higher end of reasonable and if I really wanted that style of jacket I could throw a little aside for a few months and afford it....it’s slowly but surely creeping out of that price range imo.

Ironically enough it’s probably going to get to the point where an average guy can only afford 1 really nice jacket....just like “back in the day”.

There are entire industries designed to separate rich people from their money, many rich are the ultimate rubes with money, maybe they don't care or automatically buy the story if the price tag is high. Go to any high end shopping district, especially the Japanese designers and boutiques.....$2000 for a jacket that looks like a sack cloth. Don't get me started on antique furniture...lol. Whatever, it is their money so have at it, but it does make me giggle sometimes.

It would be interesting to know what loungers think is "Rich"? 99% of people in the world think that we're rich - people who have computers and spare time to discuss on internet about clothing and spend more money on pieces of clothing than what is absolutely necessary.

Rich, as in cash rich? My guess would be having enough not to worry about working for it, having enough to indulge yourself whenever the whim or mood takes you and never having the sort of worries that debt brings.

On the other hand, a beautiful young lady said yes to my proposal of marriage, and 50 years later she's as beautiful as ever. That experience has really enriched my life. Likewise our circle of friends who enjoy the same sort of music and vintage past times as we do. I know that my remarks come across as an old romantic, but in honesty, I'm truly grateful to be born into a country from the developed world. The deprivation that is the daily grind for millions is something that I will never know.

Well, looking at their A2’s, they’re only a bit more than a GW. Assuming the quality is comparable, I would pay an extra $400 to skip a two year wait time. That’s me, and I don’t claim it’s the right choice for everyone. Money is a renewable resource; time isn’t

I'm rich compared to the millions of kids around the world who can't go to school because they're too busy scavenging to feed themselves.
I'm poor in that I actually have to plan how I spend my money, I can't just go out and buy a Rolex.

I've noticed that my idea of who is rich has evolved with my own increasing wealth.

I come from a blue collar working class family. We weren't exactly poor, but nice houses, new cars and trips abroad were out of the question. As a child or youngster I considered those of my friends rich, whose families could afford these things. I wanted to have what they had.

When I grew up I bought a house, new car and holiday trips, but I didn't consider myself rich. Mainly because of hard work, debt and mortgage that were needed to get these niceties. I started to think, that people who could maintain my kind of lifestyle without having to have debt and work hard, were indeed the rich ones, and yes, I wanted to have what they had.

Now I have reached the debt free status and enough income from my investments that it's unlikely that I would ever need to work another day to maintain rather lavish lifestyle. Alas, do I consider myself rich? There are times when I think that I am indeed Rich, but other times I think that the really rich are those who have private jets, garage full of Ferraris and apartments around the globe. Good thing is that I don't want to have what they have. Don't get me wrong, I would take those things if somebody gave me those. It's just that I will not pursue that kind of wealth and lifestyle. I have enough already!

So on philosophical level I think that one who is content with his or hers wealth, life and lifestyle is rich.

There's a difference between being rich and being priveleged.

There are also very rich people who are spiritually and culturally poor.I would rather be broke than be that.

Let’s be real. If you don’t experience this everyday just to get water, compared to the majority of the population, you’re rich.

80% of the world population lives on less than $10 a day.

It’s a shame the term “first world problems” has lost its actual impact and meaning.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m as guilty as everyone else thinking I have real problems day to day but it’s nice to get some perspective every now and again.

Great point PN. When I returned from Ethiopia I completely stopped caring about petty annoyances. It’s kind of crept back in but you are absolutely right. What struck me the most though is how happy people were, despite some very tough circumstances. And here I sit like a little bitch complaining about the most mundane of “problems”.

I love my RMC jacket, but mine cost less than half what that one does. I would love to own that jacket, but even being someone who does adore Japanese products, I would have to earn a lot more money to be willing to pay that much for it.

Yeah, that's real poverty. Just because these people grow up without running water doesn't mean they're stupid. Can't blame them for being angry when they see how others live.
Can't blame them for wanting 'our' lifestyles that they see on TV, and then worry about how we're going to save the planet.

nothing richer than being able to sleep at night without worry, you can have all the money but if that make you losing sleep, you're not rich.

I do believe that most of the people here could buy this jacket. They just don't want to and prefer to have +10 jackets instead of 1 or 2 because you just see more value in having 10 choices rather than only a few. The thing is that we don't really "need" so many choices and if we settled for quality over quantity (Here we are more of quality and quantity but anyway...) maybe we would all see some very cool jackets that are truly worn in!

That's the reality and the TFL effect at play. If any of you really lived in a super cold place and wanted this jacket you know you could purchase it if you just stopped hoarding jackets.

Of course there might be some people who buy this jacket that already own 20 more jackets which value is super high but I don't think all the RMC customers are like that.

Unless I missed something I think Big J was simply responding to the idea that some people think those who are poor are so because they are stupid. Those types seem to lack an understanding of circumstances or history and/or have no empathy.
