Comments You Get When You Dress Vintage

Our church has both a choir and orchestra; I'm in the choir. Yesterday I talked to a friend of mine who plays the clarinet. We see each other from afar every week, but scarcely get a chance to talk. She told me that the clarinetists all look forward to see what I wear every Sunday - "aww, she's so cute!" She called me their "fashionista" or something like that. And really, I have no idea if they recognize it as vintage; I got the impression that they just like what I wear. Just a little story, but it both amused and gratified me.

This is my first time in the powder room, I hope I am not intruding!

I saw this thread and thought I would comment on something that happened to me last night.

Last night, I attended this event nearby. You can find a pic (albeit, not a very flattering one) at the end of my post that shows what I wore. I got there promptly at 7PM, had a wonderful evening, and left at 9:44PM (The event ended at 10PM). I had parked two blocks away and as I left the front gate of the mansion it occurred to me that it was "Saturday night" so there would be teenagers "cruising the loop."

I thought to myself, "Well if I'm going to get heckled for my clothes tonight, this'll be the time."

As I approached the intersection at the end of the first block, a car of young women drove up to the stop sign. I thought, "Okay, here it is...."

To my surprise, as I pass in front of the car, I hear someone inside genuinely say, "Oh, hes dressed so nice!"

As I got to the sidewalk on the other side, I hear someone in the car say, "Nice bow tie!"
I simply say, "Thanks!" and continue on my way.

I think I might have been in actual shock, preparing for the worse and getting blown away by a nice positive little comment.

My only regret is in my stunted reply. But it was a perfect finish to a truly pleasant evening.

A comment I recently received was: "Have you been to a job interview ... or a wedding?" I think it was the flashy hat teamed with a nice but sensible jacket, skirt and stockings that gave it away.

Just the other day, my boyfriend and I were at a furniture store, first day of a fresh pin curl set. A young lady about my age practically jumped in front of me, waving her hands, and says, "Oh, I just LOVE your hair! It's so bright and shiny and fun! It's fantastic!"

Oh and I'm with you ladies donning the red lips -- such a sharp look and boy, do I love the attention

Lately, when I wear vintage, I don't do the hair and make-up. People just comment on how nice I look. I'm still trying to get up the nerve to wear the red lips. I loved the attention when I wore red to a party lst week. I need to figure out how to do my hair in a vintage style after this bad haircut.

I got on a Swirl dress kick and wore one that was red with white embroidery. It didn't look mexican (like all the ones you have to wade thru you know) but almost german. Someone asked me if I was dressed Puerto Rican? :eusa_doh:

All right, ladies. I've gone back and read some of your posts. I completely forgot about last weekend. We were at a convention with a lot of people I hadn't seen since I started losing weight. Friday night, I wore my new Simplicity 50's jumper, without the blouse, red lips, and black heels. I forgot to pack my hot rollers, so no vintage hair. When we arrived at the party, people were in various stages of intoxication, so the compliments were a little more direct than I would have prefered, but every man in the room said something complimentary. I was floored! I'm sure it was the combo of weight loss and the fab dress, but considering that all the other ladies were wearing those high-waisted boho dresses that are in right now, I'm pretty sure I was the cutest chick in the room.

me in 40s inspired silk tea dress, he in velvet jacket and slacks. The club was a local indie / rock joint. It didn't take long for the young trendy things to come up with a label - we were christened "the librarians". We didn't queue at the bar once, had huge numbers of drinks bought for us and loads of compliments. At the end of the evening we were whisked to the head of the coat queue and the young woman behind the counter squelled -hey the librarians - fantastic! We got escorted out by the doorman who then flagged us a cab. It was fantastic! Seems that the outfits inspired some really lovely behaviour, and loads of warmth!

I've said it before and I'll say it again...there is nothing better when you're feeling down in the dumps than a great vintage/vintage-inspired outfit, some great shoes, and fabulous lipstick to make you cheer up and feel like you can conquer the world!

This week I've been in a funk...down and just...well, blah feeling. Today I wore the black-and-white dress from Torrid, some awesome black peep-toe platforms, my hair is done up and I've got my lippy looking just right. The best part is the comments I got as soon as I walked to the building I work in - one gentleman commented on how nice I look and that it's refreshing to see young ladies wearing appropriate and classic clothing (he was even as young as I was) and was kind enough to open the door for me. As I was getting my morning coffee at the coffee shop, the clerk said I looked lovely - "the red lipstick looks great on you!" and another co-worker commented on how nice I looked. On the way up to my desk, I passed many people in the hallway who normally don't smile at all and avoid making eye contact with you as you pass by, but they actually smiled this morning.

I always forget how good I feel when I dress nicely, and how much better it feels when I dress vintage.

The two funniest comments ever...

1. While walking through Chinatown in San Francisco with 20 (!) women in 40;s suits and hats, a rather drunk young tourist took a look and cried out "It's the fu&*in Renassaince faire!".

2. A friend and her beau were walking up the steps of the deco Ryde Hotel in the Sacramento Delta, and some biker on the porch was heard to whisper "I see dead people..."

Mostly, people like it and just want to tell us so! We brighten their drab little lives.

Once in a while I get up the energy to wear a fifties-inspired look to work (circle skirt, cardigan and blouse). It's not often, working in retail, that I feel like wearing a skirt--it gets too difficult to work in! But the responses are always positive from my coworkers--one even calls me "The Pin-Up".

I also wear a snood every once in a while, and I get a lot of compliments on that. My manager tells me that it's a "classy look" and that he's "happy to see that such a classic look can be brought back." That made my day--it's always nice when someone notices!

I was wearing a dress with a very 50s cut: Capped sleeves, sweetheart neckline, while I was at my grans nursery home.
I went to the TV-room and this old man imediately shouted out: What a pretty lady! Then he asks me where one gets a dress like that (I doubt he's a trannie)...and 3 mins later tells me "You gotta have a body to fit in that dress." lol (implying that I have that)

It was funny. lol

Recentlly, while at a library, An elderly lady, remarked that she liked my "whole outfit", and wanted to know if I was amish.

Social Experiment

I find that the comments really depend on what crowd you are with.

I know that when I am at school, with people that are all my own age (20 or so), no one will say anything to me about my look.....in fact the more vintage I dress the more they act like I have the plague or something (sorry, I may be exaggerating....its been a particularly bad day).

When I am with people a bit older than me I generally get nice comments.
For example I went to the wedding of a family friend where the crowd was mostly thirty somethings. I was dressed to the nines in a wonderful mauve dress from the late forties with my hair set so nicely and I received so many compliments! By the end of the night I was almost sick of saying thank you to people and answering questions about my clothing or my hair, it was crazy.

My favorite reaction is of older men and women. Generally people over sixty are so sweet. An man in the grocery store told me I reminded him of his late wife (I was especially touched by that, he seemed so sincerely sad) and often ladies will tell me that they used to have shoes or a hat like the one I am wearing.

I think older people tend to understand where as people my own age just don't get it, and maybe I scare them, I'm not really sure. Everyday is interesting, like my own little social experiment that the rest of the world is unknowingly subjected to

The other night I went cruising with a guy friend in his Mustang convertible and stopped at the beach parking lot, which is a popular hangout. I was wearing a flowered 50s dress. Two teen boys were going back to their car to smoke pot and one said to the other, in a nice and happy way, 'I didn't know it was going to be a party!'
