Comments You Get When You Dress Vintage

I find that I get asked who did my hair, what color red lipstick I'm wearing, where I bought my clothes, am I going to a wedding/cotume party/play... It's fun. I love when people ask me questions.

Maybe I get more comments when I don't dress vintage, it was chilly the other day so I wore some jean style leggings with a tunic sweater. My daughter said, " Nice jeggings, Mom, you're going to get kicked out of school!".
The other day my online horoscope warned me that some people might think I dress "too flashy".I have no idea what that means!

Yesterday I was at an antique shop, hunting down some old books for my mother. I do "vintage Sundays" right now because my wardrobe isn't big enough for everyday, and I was all dressed up. The shop owner, who was about five feet tall and in her seventies, comes up to me and says "I just love your look! When I'm young and tall and beautiful I'll dress that way too."

Made my day. She was adorable.

I got a wonderful compliment while at work and couldn't stop smiling. A lady came in with her husband and daughter and while I was serving them she said "I love your style, it reminds me of photos of my mother when she was young." She went on to ask if I dress in vintage everyday, why I do it etc. Then as I was just about to walk away from the table her daughter added, "You remind me a bit of Dita von Teese."
Their comments kept me grinning for the rest of the day.

Yesterday, I went to my doctor for my annual. While my nurse took me to my little room to undress, she pounced on me with enthusiastic questions about why I dress and do my hair and makeup the way I do and then started reminiscing about her grandmother. It was the best girly exam I'd ever had as we were discussing pin curls while my doctor was doing his thing.

I was told by a stranger that I look like a "1920s pinup". Made me giggle! I wasn't wearing anything risque. I think the chain of association went like this:

Fingerwaves -> 1920s -> Flapper -> Pinup

I really don't understand people making horrible, negative comments about how anyone dresses, no matter how that is. Whatever happened to the idea of "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it"? I usually feel like retorting, "It's their body and they're the ones wearing it - what does it have to do with you? It's not meant to be an affront to you personally - you really care so much about someone else's image that you're going to get ugly about it?"

I count myself lucky that I live in a town where crazier things than people dressing vintage happen daily. And it's not out of the ordinary to see older couples taking a neighborhood walk in their Sunday best. Suits, dresses, hats and all. I guess it's just the Deep South. One of my neighbors is this older black gentleman and he often walks by the house in suit pants, fedora, suit jacket thrown over a shoulder, and white shirtsleeves rolled up. So dignified. He even tips his hat to people he walks by and says "'fternoon, ya'll. Take care now, y'hear" It's so sweet.

Personally, people are very sweet to me when they make comments. And they're awful polite about it too. There're no uncomfortably invasive questions about why I wear what I do and no misogynistic hollers or comments - they just appreciate the effort and maybe ask where I got the dress or the lipstick. Hearing how horrible people can be, it kinda makes me appreciate the city I live in more but makes me sad to know that ostracizing behavior still exists to such an extent. I wish that people wouldn't resort to such meanness, especially over something as minor as how one dresses. Makes no sense at all.

I had to go to the Motor Tax Office the other day for my other half, and seeing as I was in a rush (we had to catch a train that day to go see The Rocky Horror Show!) I dressed rather hastily in a flower print circle skirt, rose coloured sweater with pearl bead collar detail and my hair in faux victory rolls (and red lips of course). Stepping out of my car rather quickly and dashing up the car park I was stopped half way by an older gentleman who said "Excuse me Miss, would you like to use the staff entrance as you seem in a bit of a rush". I'm absolutely sure that if I hadn't been dressed in a lady-like way that I would have been over looked!

Anyhoo I was very grateful to the gentleman and couldn't thank him enough!

And now that I think of it nothing that I was wearing was actual vintage...just vintage inspired

this is just lovely. i do think you do get more a gentle/ gentleman approach:eusa_clap when dressed vintage from opening doors to makeup counter ladies (well most of them haha) i have not had many comments yet nothing like you ladies have had stopping in the street. when i go to the supermarket are do get alot of older ladies just talking to me about products that i'm looking at like meat and cheese lol.

i got a funny one today:

an older and very drunk homeless man stopped me on my way to the bus. i wasn't afraid since it was the middle of the day and there were people around, and i had seen him before, he seemed pretty harmless. he started pointing at me saying: 'you, young lady, you... i see you around here quite a lot. you look great. with the lips and all... taking care of yourself. you look french!' (i get that one a LOT)

then he looked like he was trying to think of something.

'you look like someone! who! i don't remember! hold on!'

another homeless man (equally drunk) said: 'don't mind him, he's VERY drunk!'

'no, i'm not... i know... lemme think... it was this frida chick... frida frida... mexico...'

me: 'frida kahlo?'

'yes! her! you look like frida kahlo!'

me: 'uhh... ok.'

'but you keep your eyebrows in line.'

(note: i really don't look like frida kahlo at all. i secretly hoped he was referring to salma hayek, even though we don't look alike either!)

At the drug store the other day the cashier asked me if I listen to Weezer. I was really confused until he told me my glasses look like Weezer glasses. They're cateyes with rhinestones. [huh] lol

Actually i went to the pub this evening and the bartender told me i looked like Anjelica Houston. Which was interesting, as i don't look anything like her at all, (i wish).

Actually, when I saw your picture, I thought it was her and you were just using it!

I recently was stopped by a teenager in the Ladies room and was asked "where I got my glasses from?" they are black cat eyes. When I told her they were vintage and bought from some consighnment/ antique center as was my whole outfit, she quickly shrieked that, "I totally rocked!" that really made my day for sure. I live in a fairly small city but I mostly get positive comments about my vintage look and almost everyone that knows me is very used to it by now minus my brother and his wife, they just think I am strange, but I think they are squares, hehe.

The other day I was at a vintage fair in manchester, browsing the rails when a girl came up to me and tapped me on the shoulder. She seemed very excited that I had the 'Fleur' dress by Heyday on and said that I looked lovely! It was lovley thinking that she made the effort to comment!

For my work-study job at university, I'm a gallery attendant at the school art/history museum.
I wear vintage head-to-toe most days.
I am asked by visitors what part of the exhibit I'm supposed to be practically every day as well.

I hate attracting attention to myself (ironic, I know, given my clothing preferences) and it's more than a little annoying, but hey, I guess this means my clothes are "museum quality" lol !

I work in a supermarket deli and often work with juniors. I am required to wear a uniform but always wear a flower in my hair and 'vintage' style makeup. I worked with a young girl yesterday who keep staring at me...it was starting to freak me out a bit and she said I can't stop looking at you, you are just so beautiful, I love how you do your eyes and I love the red lips, you look like an old movie star (I hope she ment a movie star from an old movie and not an 'old' star LOL). It just made my night!!!!

I was asked if I was going to a dance the other day, a comment hastily followed up with "oh you look like a member of the French resistance".

I wasn't even very vintage that day.
