When I started college at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the fall of 1964, the world was still pre Hippy, and almost pre Beatle. The Beatles were out there, but only a few people on Ken Kesey's bus had grown their hair long.
We were VERY tweedy. RPI is a sort of quasi-Ivy science engineering school, so the influence was very strong. Of course the freshmen all had to wear their beanies (I put up a thread on this in the Hat forum a few weeks ago.)
But mainly we all competed with each other with the grey slacks, the tweed and tan corduroy jackets, penny loafers, etc., etc. And of course everyone was breaking in a new pipe. The aroma of Cherry Blend hung over the dormitory.
The college held mixers on a regular basis, so we all got the chance to show off our tweedy preppy uniforms. All these pimply skinny adolescents trying to be "men of distinction". Funny to look back now and realize it was the end of an era.
Within a year things started changing, and they've never been the same since.

The Belgians i knew in Lafalot insisted on Flemish. The Hollanders i knew in Lafalot insisted Dutch.

Irish Poplin

And in case anyone is wondering, Irish poplin is a 50/50 blend of wool and silk.

Marc do they make suits outta that?:eusa_doh: Please advise. Lands End had ties made from linen and silk this year. I have a few Silk and Cotton Italian ties that also tie a very nice knot.

I've never heard of suits made out of Irish poplin, but the fabric has been used for neckties since at least the '30s (and probably long before that).

I actually thought the GI Bill, Irish charm, and a casual wardrobe
stuffed inside a duffle bag would be all I'd need to get through
the Sorbie. I loved Paris, and Paris loved me back.
But the French intellectuals, choking on Camus, drinking
dago red, and smoking those awful galloies were impossible.
I greatly enjoyed the recent election results in France, now those
socialist statist idiots may have to get off their collective arse and get a job.

I taught a couple of history classes at a local community college last year, simply as an adjunct, though.
I may scare up another pic or two from teaching outings. I'm sure had zero effect on my student's attire, and almost as little on their knowledge of history.

Like that regimental tie!

RPI is in Troy, NY, across the Hudson River from Albany. It's the first technical college in America, founded in 1824.
The name is Dutch, the Dutch being the first colonizers of New York.
Great school, but merciless when it comes to weeding out those who can't hack it (i.e., moi). But I have fond memories, especially of hockey games at the RPI Field House.

Look at what I found. . .

I recently stumbled across two pairs of 1930's collegiate slacks. The waistband on these are amazing, and the cuffs are an exact 22 inch circumfrence, just like the ones advertised in the Sears Catalog. Very 1970's-esque.

Collegiate Scarves

An integral part of the winter wardrobe that you west-coasters forget about! I was admiring my professor's scarf from Yale the other day in class, so I decided to go out and look for one of my own. Sadly, NYU doesn't have its own scarf, unlike colleges in the UK and the Ivy Leagues...oh why didn't I apply for Yale drama?
So, in search of a college scarf, I went and bought a vintage one from ebay.co.uk

I believe it's from University of London's St. Thomas' Hospital Medical School.

J.Press still makes these scarves for the Ivy League schools...
Think this will pass for NYU colors? It fooled somebody on askandy [huh]

Who else has any interesting college scarves? Baron Kurtz?

Oddly mislabeled as 'Yale' when they are clearly the colors of the University of Kentucky. Apparently Yale is a small school in Connecticut.

That is my current look on campus, and I think it still looks great. Trim V-neck sweater, oxford shirt, baggy slacks, argyle socks and penny loafers. When I feel like it I add a tie. The guy at the far right in the third picture down might as well be wearing my exact daily outfit.

It doesn't stand out like wearing a suit would, but looks plenty vintage and is also considered "dressy" by todays standards.

This is basically mine as well, but I tend towards round neck sweaters when without tie.

Yale University might share the same colors as University of Kentucky, but that's definitely Yale University colors right there.

....right. Those are close to Citadel colors. They'll have to lighten the blue a bit. I do suppose some obscure schools like UK and Yale might use something similar.
