Robert Hutchins was of the same mind when he shut down the football program at the University of Chicago in the 1930's. But decades later, before his death, he regretted the act as he came to understand the positive impact athletic teams have on school spirit and camaraderie. A famous Hutchins quote was, "Whenever I get the urge to exercise, I lie down until the urge passes."dhermann1 said:I do enjoy watching college football, and there's nothing more fun than enjoying a big time college game live, HOWEVER, I'm always reminded of a comment by the president of Harvard University, I believe it was Charles Eliot, around 1899 "Football has about as much to do with scholarship as bull fighting has to do with agriculture." Or words to that effect. It's a lot of fun, but the big time game has had SUCH a corrupting influence on American higher education.
