Cloth Diapers?

At this point I think it's a little obvious that I have a vested interest in vintage children's products... :) But nonetheless I was wondering if anyone here had ever used cloth diapers on their children or planned to and if so were they more hassle than they were worth, or a joyous alternative to paper ones?

We have a few dozen cloth diapers(and a new baby) but the common use for them seems to be for baby-wiping, as baby-vomit drop-cloths and when wet, ass whipping of Mrs. BT.

The disposable jobs perform the function far better and 'contain' the contents in a far superior manner. Storing/soaking/washing/disinfecting cloth diapers must be the chore of chores.
The disposable are better for baby and parents-

If you are in a city of any size, there is probably a diaper service available, that will come by daily to collect the befouled ones and leave freshly laundered. I was just reading somewhere that using a diaper service is even better from a ecological standpoint than doing the washing yourself...as they have economies of scale, &c. Signed, a true conservative :)

We used a diaper service for a while. The cloth diapers needed to be changed a little more often to keep our little fella's little fella from getting too red and (I'm guessing) painful. Then he went through a period where he seemed to be getting rocket fuel when we thought it was all breastmilk all the time. I mean, KA-BOOM, a mighty yellowish geyser of baby poop. The cloth diapers just couldn't contain it, no matter how creative we were with the folds (your fold them and they're held in place with some cute little rubber trunks). So we started using disposables, which isn't so bad as we have a green bin program in my city, whereby all organic waste and disposable diapers are ground and composted or some such. We would go back to the diaper service but discoverd that disposable diapers could be purchased on the seriously cheap if you watch for sales, and the diaper service costs what it costs. Money being tight at the moment...

We're considering going back to using the service. We'll still need disposable because you can't change him on the go with cloth diapers, and the ECE/Daycare he's going to in January won't allow cloth diapers for, they say, sanitary reasons.

My mother used cloth diapers on the young Baron Kurtz and the elder baron, his brother - largely as a monetary thing. She reasoned that money spent on disposable diapers was money wasted, and landfills filled unnecessarily. They are filthy things, of course, but a bucket, with a lid, dedicated to the job, and a separate wash cycle when the diapers are to be washed will answer all filth problems.

I believe she also secretly liked the feeling of having all her diapers out on the washing line. Thereby everyone could see that she was a mother, and say nice things to her based upon that fact :)

we used them, loved them...

and much cheaper than paper. Besides all the eco benifits.

And I'm saying this and the one who does the laundry in the family.

I don't have a financial interest in this company I'm just a customer. Feel free to PM me for details since it isn't really vintage. This are high tech diapers....

Yep. We used them...the kids hated them...but we used them for a while. I've got to admit, the discomfort of a cloth diaper and rubber drawers got the kids trained faster than using today's 'Keep their bottom dry, no matter what' products that folks have access to. Heck, kids never LEARN to use the facilities...why bother? CLoth diapers break that cycle REAL fast! ;) Regards! Michaelson

I recently found out that I had cloth diapers and glass baby bottles. Its kinda funny seeing how I was born in 1988.

My Mother used cloth diapers on me and my older brother, but used disposables on my younger brother. She says they did a better job, and she didn't have as much time to wash all of the diapers with three children.

We used mostly cloth on our daughters in the 70s when, of course, disposable were available. Disposables come in handy for away from home excursions when the logistics of soiled cloth ones is problematic.

This thread smells to high heaven! :p

Sorry, I don't really have much to ad to this thread other then cloth diapers are great for wiping down vintage silver and to polish such items. And, if you want to raise kids the old school way, then its cloth all the way.

I have to say that we used disposable diapers exclusively. I didn't like the idea of contributing to landfills everywhere, but since my son was born with an intestinal malfunction (corrected through surgery), we just had to make things easier on ourselves somehow. However, cloth diapers are the best cleaning clothes in the world. I just bought another package of them, even though my son is now 10, to use as cleaning rags.

Getting to the bottom of things

We used cloth diapers at home, but disposable when out and about. The old cloth ones make great shoulder spit up guards for burping or polishing rags (as mentioned).

I'm surprised that so many children find cloth diapers uncomfortable. My mother says that I wouldn't wear disposable ones; only cloth ones. Even then, I preferred natural fibers.
