I would trust a professional

Since they are much more "stiff", I suggest care. The straw will discolor over time, so are we talking about a whole new look, or wiping off surface dust?

I don't know ANYONE making boaters today, eccept the cheap ones you see on Millerhats.com (not knocking them). If it's vintage, I would call Graham at Optimo and ask. The call is free. He would be my source. I would hate to see one ruined. I have only one Boater. It is very old. I like it. So I wouldn't steam or clean this hat myself. IMHO>

It's not really discolored, there is a black dust/grim in the weave itself.

Maybe you can try vacuuming it first! Some vacuum cleaners have a soft brush "nozzel" that may allow you to lightly brush it and get what ever is loose first.

Good luck with your skimmer!

Velvet

For light dirt use a piece of velvet that has been held in the steam for a few seconds. Rub in circles.

For light straw try ½ teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide and ½ teaspoon of warm water

For very stubborn stains.. try some dry cleaners fluid.

Vinegar and water mix. Use a lint free cloth (the velvet is fine too) as you don't want bits of fluff and thread sticking to rough bits of straw. Just rub with the grain of the straw :)
I've worn my boater in a few down pours and the water runs off it like the guttering off a a New Orleans jazz club during monsoon :)
It's a 'duck's arse' of a hat! Enjoy it.
