Clean shaved in the golden era.

It seems many of the ladies and gentlemen here appreciate the way things were in times gone by. Apart from wearing hats, my favorite practice from yesteryear is old fashioned shaving. One of the most relaxing past times is standing in front of a mirror with real shaving soap (not goo in a can), a shaving brush and a razor sharp straight razor. The days troubles are wiped away and washed down the sink along with the whiskers.

Does anyone else here share this particular obsession with sharp shiny steal and smooth skin?

Thanks, sure hope my wife thinks so. Oh well, she didn't go off too much when I shaved my head last summer (it was the hottest day of the year).
This year I went with the flat top.

As a former wearer of a soul patch (or Imperial mustache, as it was referenced in an old old old dictionary), I must say I endorse the change in facial foliage.

The soul patch enjoys a long and varied pedigree: I was inspired to one day grow mine when as a youngster I saw a photo of Dizzy Gillespie. He wore classic bebop era suits and a soul patch the size of brillo pad. Plus, the cat could wail.

It also shows up on cowboys from time to time.

I have never shaved with a straight razor and I don't think I ever will. I use an elecrtic shaver because the razors and I don't agree on one thing. I don't like to bleed to death and the razor says I should. The last time I shaved with a blade was when I was in the military during an exercise (simulated war games) when I had to shave with cold water in my helmet and a Gillette 2 bladed razor. I had so many cuts on my face and neck, the others laughed like crazy after I shaved. The rest is history.

I've been known to dry shave on occasion when in a hurry. Sometimes it turns out ok and sometimes...well...not so good, heh.[huh] I have very recently tried oil shaving(actually the last 3 shaves so yeah, very, very recently) and I do like it a good deal. It is very soothing. I have always hated shaving, blade or electric, always been prone to burn on the lower neck which is hell in the summer what with the heat and humidity. I guess I just need to have a bit of patience and create my own ritual that I can enjoy. Like I said, the oil (menthol and eucalyptus) has definitely helped me to have a different attitude toward shaving. Time will tell, eh?

I tried dry shaving myself. Honestly, it felt like I was shaving with an electric salami slicer. I had to put down the blade and go right to the electric shaver. I'll never do that again. I hate having to shave also.

Thanks Bustercat, I liked the way it turned out, too. My wife took it very well, heh heh. Before I excised the facial fungus, I did a quick Google for pencil mustaches, printed a picture of Vincent Price, grabbed a piece of scotch tape and disappeared into the bathroom with my machete to do battle with the vines and roots, heh. It reminded me of the night before my wedding because I decided I should trim my mustache and it wasn't long before I looked like a certain fascist dictator. Needless to say, I appeared at the alter, sans mustache and looking like a lad of 16. This last trim was performed on my 30th wedding anniversary and if I do say so myself, it did turn out pretty damn good.

I'll keep in mind not to do any trimming at the altar next year.
