When the went lights down, the ceiling gave the impression of the night sky studded with stars.

We don't have any real theaters left around here. They are all the multi screen deals that could easily be converted to warehouse space or somthing. High back seats with wide armrests and cupholders don't make up for the lack of anything desirable about the rest of the experience. The one in the town where I work is apparently staffed by people whose hearing is worse than mine. It is so loud that I don't know how people with good hearing can stand it and it's usually just above the perfect temperature for hanging meat. I miss the Rivoli, the Lark and the Illinois.

Coincidentally, the only original ballroom left in London is called The Rivoli. As well as dances they have cinema showings their too. My missus and I have been to many a great night there.

the sky effects in older theaters were neat. I heard there was a theatre out in California somewhere that had neon lined clouds hanging from the ceiling

My hometown movie theater is celebrating it's 80th anniversary. I saw a lot of movies there when I was a boy! The Saturday Matinee cost 35 cents. That left 15 cents for popcorn and a candy bar.

A sad note. The local theatre in Pembroke, Ontario, on the Ottawa River. This was open as recently as four years ago:

The Roxy Theatre, Victoria British Columbia. A converted Quonset hut. It was a regular film theatre while we lived there '05 to '08, now part of a theatrical group with occasional film showings.

Here’s another theatre from California. on the cinema treasures website there was recent comment about bids being put in for restoration. Hopefullly all goes well for thier plans to reopen the theater.

it ultimately became one of the remodoled United artist theaters with the upper seating turned into additional auditoriums like many theaters in the 70’s.

The Whittier Theater, which opened in June of 1929 as the McNees Theater and seated 1,200, also had small small lights in the ceiling that represented stars when the lights went out. They not only included some of the more well-known constellations like the Big Dipper, the Little Dipper, and Orion's Belt, but also projected clouds on the ceiling that moved slowly while the movies played.

The interior had what was referred to as "Hacienda style" sidewalls, presumably to give customers the feeling they were watching the movies outdoors in a village square:

This photo also shows why I use the term "had" when I write about this theater. The damage you see was mostly cosmetic; structural damage caused by the Whittier Narrows earthquake in October of 1987 eventually deemed the complex to be unsalvageable, and the entire complex was demolished in 1990.

We have two cinema's on the island where I live, one is a regular multiplex the 2nd looks nothing special from the outside but does have a 'vintage' feel on the inside.

Not as grand as some of the pics in this thread, but grateful we have this local to us.
