Wow, whats really interesting to me at least is the china plates in the last picture of the 2nd set. 6 plates fused together from the heat of the fire. Dang

I can imagine if something like that happened today in the USA, I do not think it would be a pretty site.

Thanks for the pics Green Papaya, my folks were not alive then, my decreased grandparents were not born either & I never knew my GGrands so while they would have been alive (kids or babies) they could not tell me stories of those days.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the thread... but... My Dad had a sister that was born in 1900... Dad was born in 1906...

She used to tease Dad by telling him that his birth caused the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake...

Dad said he believed it for the longest...

HAH!!

old Army food menu at FORT POINT, SF

here is the type of foods that would have been common back in Civil war to early 1900 era at army forts, this image is from a display at Ft Point in SF under the Golden Gate Bridge.

since the Army did set up field kitchens to feed the refugees in 1906, they were probably fed this type of food or something similar, foods like beef stew, hash, soup & bread, stewed fruit, Pork & beans, and lots of coffee

notice there is no mention of milk? I guess milk wasnt a common food before the advent of refrigeration? they seemed to drink a lot of coffee back then?

Notice also the complete absence of chicken. Salt pork or "embalmed beef" were de rigueur in field kitchens at the turn of the century, but it wasn't until the twenties that Hormel came up with an effective process for canning whole chickens.

I think they may have used Salt Pork to make Pork & Beans? I wonder why no chickens, probably hard to supply fresh chickens in large supply, it seems they ate lots of beef dishes though.
