CELL PHONE (evidence of a good one please)

Hello. I seem to have many issues at times with internet connections, so I will resort to trying to do things on line with my cell phone, which is a not so "hot rod" android, a motorola exprt. It does some things decently on line, but it is limited in doing many things, such as posting a picture here on the lounge from photobucket, and it is slower than a turtle climbing a phone pole.

My question is, what do you use, what seems to make it a good phone and do you recommend it? I have been looking at the expensive Galaxy Note phones, but geez, I could buy a used car for the price of those! Tell me what is a good cell phone choice?

I use and iPhone to do everything. I have been programming websites for years and really use both a computer and iPhone hard. I push these devices against walls and press real hard.

If your phone can run tap to talk it will make using this forum so much easier. With android phones there are different levels of phone and not all of them can do everything. So you need to be careful if you want one of those.

Thanks..the phone I have now is an android, but it is a lower platform systems, and a cheapo one, does not have all the extra memory or fancy processor in it.

I use my iPhone 5 for everything. I've installed every bit of productivity software a desktop computer might have, from word processing to music production, and it's now the only computer I own. I can write my stories, do the cafe financials, track inventory, produce songs from my synthesizer, play games, use the Internet, and do all the calling, texting photos and emails of a lesser phone. It's my all in one gadget.

Thanks....I will check that phone out. I was looking at the Galaxy Note phones, but I have to tell you I am not a very "computer" savvy or phone app savvy person. The phone I have now constantly tells me that there are "updates" to some programs on the phone, I don't use them and do not understand what to really do with the "update" as it is, so I just clear them and use the phone "as is".....lol!

im quite happy with my samsung galaxy s. its an old phone by today's standards. my buddy has the galaxy 3 and he's very happy with it.

i tend to keep phones until they die. a very important factor in my phone purchase is a user replaceable battery. something the iphone does not have. i can buy replacement batteries for my samsung on ebay for about $6 and have a few spares for when on the road all day. cant do that with an iphone. when your battery dies, better go find a charger.

"updates" aren't always to your benefit, specially with free apps. it's not uncommon for that wonderful free app you got a few months ago to suddenly not work so great because you updated it and they want you to buy the paid version. i don't update jack unless the new version of the app has a feature i must have.

I'll go against at the grain here. I am an android fan. Open source, replaceable battery etc. never was a fan of the iPhone. I wouldn't own one but that's just me personally. The android platform is more versatile for my uses. In time Google is going to run the world
I have a droid version and my wife a Samsung. Can't go wrong with either

Yep, it's much more convenient to just slip in a fully charged backup battery instead of searching for an ac outlet.

Absolutely one of the 10 best buys I have ever made in my life so far. It is now almost 2 years old and the only issue I have is that I need a new battery. You can type on it wearing gloves- which for a vintage lady is a must!

An that's some how a good thing. You do know that everything you pass thru Google is tracked and used to serve you ad's and sell your profile to others.
Just watch how ad's on a web page changes during a week depending on where you have been and what you search for on Google.

Yep. Sadly I totally agree it may not be a good thing but it seems to be headed in that direction. I guess I just got past the fact as long as I am "connected" , which unfortunately I have to be, big brother or some iteration of, is going to know everything.
I think we have reached a saturation point where it is inevitable.

The problem is that the manufactors of google phones other than Samsung and app coders are notating money. We will see how this sustains long term.
I have computer and electronic degrees and understand the importance of developing the whole device as Apple does. Separating software from hardware development causes all kinds of problems which we have seen occur with Windows thru the years.

The Galaxy Note are lovely. I had the option on one. They really are mini-tablets though... I decided against in the end because they are just of a size which is not pocket-friendly, and I don't always carry a bag. I'm very happy with my Galaxy SIII, recently acquired as a new personal phone. I also have a work phone which is a Galaxy SII, also great. The biggest advantage of the SIII over its predecessory is the ease with which you can switch blutooth / mobile data / wifi etc on and off via a drop down toolbar that is always on top (with the SII, it is three menu steps to do those things). Keeping those sorts of bits switched off when you don't need them extends the battery life like you would not believe.

Google, as with all the big boys, have their limitations.... I'm a fain of the Android OS, though. The Samsungs are the best phones I have seen on the market currently. A friend had a Windows phone for a while - it was atually really nice, but the platform has such a limited take-up so far that there is very little available in the way of useful apps.

They are all at it the same, alas. I don't much care for keyword-based, auto-generated advertising, but on the flipside I'm not prepared to pay for my searches, so...

I can see the argument, though on the flipside I much prefer that over the Apple model of trying to box the consumer in to their walled garden of proprietary everything. Horses for courses, I suppose. Interesting though to see Microsoft with the Surface attempting to get into the 'box' market, as opposed to the business model which made them such a big success.

That's a thing Apple devices do which I really hate.... I don't see the use for it, other than as a marketing thing, I suppose.

I read technical and developer sites as that is one of my interest.
A former Nokia analyst has the best site an pod cast on the cell phone industry I read it every day.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. It's about 1.5 years old and still doing a fine job for me. Being that it's an older phone, I'd probably recommend its successor, the Nexus 4. However I've heard many good things about the brand new Galaxy S4.

The Nexus devices are my number 1 pick, because they are completely stock Android. Many Android phones have manufacturer specific software loaded on them. This slows down the updates and some of that software is just blot. Also, the Nexus devices are highly customizable from a software prospective if that sort of thing interests you.

I personally find the freedom of the Android environment much more in keeping with my needs than the very locked down nature of Apple and iOS.

Just the numbers.

Looks like an interesting blog. Absolutely - what I put above is a personal view. I've had some experience with Macs - tried a lot, my brother is all-Apple. Just don't like 'em myself. Part of which is a real dislike for the way I perceive them to be flogging a lifestyle brand - personal prejudice. The Windows boxes have just always been a much better fit for my needs, at a much lower price (it's probably not the same in the US, but over here the average Apple computer is around double the price of the Windows box that does everything I require of it). Horses for courses, really - I have friends in the design / film editing side of things who swear by Apple. As it sits, the only Apple device I've got a use for is my iPod, which happened to be the cheapest option for the features I required (mainly a big hard drive!). It's a very nice tool - I have no complaints.

Sony is my favourite cell phone brand (formerly sony ericsson). I have a sony ericsson z500, that I've had since 2004 and it still works perfectly; its my backup phone which I named ol' reliable. Since then I've owned another sony ericsson that went bad, but it was from hong kong so no wonder, a motorola which I had trouble with, and an acer which had a plethora of problems. I'm currently using a sony xperia U, which I've had since last summer and still works great. It was a great great deal for its price considering its specs (dual core processor makes it really fast). I got it for 200 bucks. The whole xperia line looks good.

I have friends in the design / film editing side of things who swear by Apple.

I'm the opposite. I'm a graphic designer and I don't own one apple product. The way I see it, yes its well designed and looks pretty, but for graphic design a computer is just a tool, and tools should not have to be pretty.
